If that's the case, the instructor was even more of an idiot than if it was semi auto. That is a big piece of the story that is missing. Obviously he wasn't using proper safety techniques or he wouldn't have been killed. It's much more likely to happen on full auto.

I've seen people shooting guns that were semiauto, where they could have shot themselves by accident. If the gun recoils so hard the muzzle flips up and back an accidental second trigger pull could do them in.

Thats why earlier in the thread I mentioned that its a good safety practice to only load one round in a new gun for any shooter that may not be ready for the recoil.

The UZI is an extremely difficult gun to control. The shooter is actually supposed to press their support hand down on the top of the gun to keep it from rising.

I expect the 9 year old will remember not to make that mistake in future

The 9 year old didn't make any mistakes. Her parents and instructor did and now the poor girl may be traumatized for life.

Excellent advise that any shooting instructor should know. Everyone handles recoil differently, but the instructor much teach the student how to prepare for and handle it.

Because it was common for children to be allowed to handle guns like an adult?

I think it was because kids were taught how to handle guns, especially in rural America. Everyone wasn't anti gun 40 or 50 years ago. People that enjoyed hunting and shooting weren't looked upon as future mass murderers like they are today.

Once again, the focus is on the gun, when the reason there has been a fatality (of the idiot) is because the weapons instructor was an idiot. His ego far outstripped his situational awareness and the result ended his life, while likely ruining that of a nine year old girl.

But no, the gun is the focal point to most people. It's sad, really. :(

Amazing isn't it? When someone is shot there seems to always be a gun present. It is almost as though you would need a gun in order to shoot someone, when we all know this 9-yo could just as easily have killed the instructor by simply throwing ammo at him.

i'm surprised it hasn't happened before since the last stop seems like a tourist attraction http://youtu.be/PgU_7nBKXN8

That was just stupid. Poor trigger control. Bad spray pattern. They let the weapon rise up.

This little girl has gotten good instruction and decent technique .
