DOLAN SPRINGS, Ariz. — A 9-year-old girl accidentally killed an Arizona shooting instructor as he was showing her how to use an Uzi, authorities said Tuesday.

Charles Vacca, 39, of Lake Havasu City, died Monday shortly after being airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Mohave County sheriff’s officials said.

Vacca was standing next to the girl at the Last Stop outdoor shooting range in White Hills when she pulled the trigger and the recoil sent the gun over her head, investigators said.

Authorities said the girl was at the shooting range with her parents. Her name was not released.

A woman who answered the phone at the shooting range said it had no comment. She did not provide her name.

It is not known if the range had an age limit on shooting or if the girl was going through a safety class.

Ronald Scott, a Phoenix-based firearms safety expert, said most shooting ranges have an age limit and strict safety rules for teaching children to shoot. He said instructors usually have their hands on guns when children are firing high-powered weapons.

“You can’t give a 9-year-old an Uzi and expect her to control it,” Scott said.

Why in the ha!l was he giving her the gun in the first place? I don't get Americans period.

Was he training her to be a future mass murderer? Who gives kids uzis at 9 years old? Why not an army tank? A bazooka? I know!! An unmanned strike droid.

She was taking lessons. The instructor didn't follow safety procedure and it cost him his life. I thought you were an American and your husband was from a foreign country?

I am American. Hahahahha and still don't get Americans.

I don't understand why give a 9 year old lessons on any kid of gun.

You've said you think there are too many shooting deaths and gun accidents. Safety and education can go a long way to reducing that. We need responsible gun owners but unfortunately this instructor made a grave error and this girl will probably be severely effected by this accident. If you want responsible gun owners and users, they need to be taught proper safety and shooting.

Or maybe I should just ask this way:

What is the purpose of teaching a 9 year to shoot an Uzi?

Unless they are Jewish and going for the history angle not much of a purpose.

One thing too I've always believed when a person is shooting a particular gun for the first time, load just a single round until they get used to the recoil.

Didn't you have an Uzi growing up?

We were just having a family discussion today. My daughters birthday is coming up and we can't decide between a trip to Disney World or a sub machine gun.

That highlights the absurdity of this situation nicely.

A totally pointless accident. Ridiculous.

How is educating a 9 year old on how to use an uzi beneficial to the U.S.

She should be in tutoring, piano lessons, taking up a foreign language. Not learning to use weapons that murder millions around the world everyday at the age of 9. She we throw in cigars and liquor too?
