Health insurance for over 65 year old new immigrants.

Once I become a US citizen I would like to petition to bring my elderly parents out to the US permanently.

I have everything pretty much sorted in my mind how to do it, except for Health Insurance.

I know they are not eligible for medicare but can buy into it after they have been permanent residents for five years. So that is out of the immediate question.

I have tried getting quotes from insurance companies but they dont want to cover anyone over 65 because they expect medicare to cover at that point.

I know there is such a thing as inbound immigrant insurance and can get coverage for up to five years that way but it is only up to a max of $75,000 and doesnt really cover normal doctors visits. And I am not sure if i meets the ACA requirements for legal cover.

So my real question is, has anyone been able to sign up for health insurance for over 65s on healthcare.gov or any of the health exchanges?

If so, who was the insurance provider and what did the premiums and coverage look like?

~~moved to moving here and your new life in America from General immigration as the question is about when you're in the USA and health insurance, not about immigration itself.~~

Same prob here. Father-in-law has his green card but we can't get insurance. The Kentucky KYNECT (ACA site) says he has to have lived here for five years. I don't know what the healthcare.gov site requires. I just spent about an hour reading the regulations and can't find anything that says he has to live her for five years to qualify for payment assistance which is what Kentucky says so I sent off an email to their insurance site. We will see what happens.45 CFR 155.305 is the eligibility requirements if you wanna give them a read.

Thats great I will have a look.

As I said I found a thing called inbound immigrant insurance, look at ***removed***.com. But I am not sure if it complies with the ACA.

K so I got a response from my email this am. I was really shocked they responded so quickly. She is going to help us set up an account for father-in-law on the KYNECT system and then he will receive insurance with payment assistance. He will not receive Medicaid but he is qualified for payment assistance under the ACA.

So once they arrive and have green cards and social security cards you should be able to sign them up under your state's ACA system or healthcare.gov. If your income is too high for them to qualify I suggest you contact your state's health benefits services office for assistance. At least it, amazingly, worked for me.

Thanks very much for the information.

Did you get an idea of what the premiums will be? This is a factor in them coming over to the US. I don't want them coming from the UK with all the benefits and support they have there to potentially the equivalent of third world health care if insurance is too expensive.

The amount of the payment assistance depends on the household's income. He qualifies for $468 per month towards insurance. Best thing is to run it through the system (if you can) with your household size and income and see what happens.

Please see my post

As long as you don't claim your parents as dependents on your tax forms (file their taxes separately), you should be able to find subsidized health insurance for your parents at VERY reasonable rates.
