Green Card Holder and Applying to College

Hey guys, been quite awhile since i've been back on here but I find myself circling back for some advice. My wife, who has her conditional green card, is trying to apply for college. She's going to take the TOELF and studying hard for to take the SAT too. Her problem is trying to apply for schools, she's lost and well I am too. It's been forever since I went through the college process and on top of that many things have currently changed. She's trying to fill out the Common Application (which is 100% new to me). Do any of you know of any resources to help us understand what to do, or even someone on here who has gone through the process that could help her?

There is no need for the GRE if she wants to apply for undergraduate school.

And she needs the Toefl if her native language is no english, no matter if she is a GC holder or not.

I took TOEFL and it's sitting there collecting dust. I'm in a process of starting school myself, and I'll be the first one to tell you that I've yet to be asked about it. Now, ACT, is a different story.

As a non native US , they ask if your first tongue is English and if not want to test your skills to make sure you won't be lost in class. You apply for school but until your wife is a resident per the school rules ( which is more than getting a green card ) you will pay non resident rates. You can also apply for aide.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

It must be different in every state or something, because they are just treating me like any other Kentucky resident student to be.

I wasn't asked about my English either.

My husband didn't need a TOEFL or SAT scores because of his age. How old is your wife? What is her highest level of education? Have you thought about contacting the admissions offices directly because of the unusual situation?

In many states you are a resident for tuition purposes if your spouse is resident for tuition purposes, so look into that.

I would recommend to go to ADMISSIONS at the campus you are planning to register and ask the questions. I just started College again and they accepted my interview letter to register and pay in district tuition. I still have to bring the GC once it arrives in the mail so I do not have any holds. I transferred my credits from previous college so the process was different for me, I didn't need to show vaccine records or have any placement test.

Good luck!

I am going back to school this fall and neither did I need a TOEFL test, nor did I have to take a SAT/ACT test. The only thing I will still have to complete is a placement test so that they know which level my English and Math skills are. Just contact the Student Service Center at the school your wife wants to attend. They will guide you through the process and will tell you which steps you have to complete.

I am presently a college student in my Junior year and all that I submitted was a copy of my transcript from my high school in Jamaica as well as my medical billing transcript that was done here. Maybe it's different when the primary language is not English, but I had no problem. I also signed up for my medical billing course the day I got my GC in hand (2009) and had no problem. I think the best thing to do is to ask for help from academic advising. They will answer all the questions and tell you what is required.
