Had trouble at the Social Security office today...

My wife has received her green card, so we went to the social security office today to apply for a social security card (and number, of course.) While there, we ran into a problem. My wife is listed on her green card with her married name (my surname), while her passport and visa has her listed by her maiden name.

The lady there said we needed a certified translation (not a notarization) of our marriage certificate. When we applied for my wife's green card, we presented the USCIS with an official government notarization from the Shanghai Municipal court validating our marriage certificate, which they accepted with no problem. I'm afraid, however, that this may not be enough for the social security department, as they clearly stated notarizations are not accepted.

Has anyone ran into this problem before? How would/should I go about getting a "certified" copy of our marriage certificate?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Being the original and certified translation to the SSA next time you apply.
