The New York Times called Michael Brown "no angel." Here's how it described serial killers.

There's no doubt the word thug and the term "thug life" was and is embraced by a percentage of the black population. I'm not sure why there is such an uproar when a white person refers to a black person who fits that image as a thug?

That's it,, Your out of the Mag 7

I know what you are saying, but teenagers brains are not fully formed, and their need to belong to something is strong. I think most teenagers are wannabes, and I don't think it's fair to tell them to act more grown up and get a life. Because they are just dumb kids. I think people are too quick to see adult actions in teenagers instead of seeing them as kids in nearly adult bodies.

My mom always tells the story that when her kids were little that she was a little afraid of teenagers. They walked in packs and were intimidating! Then once we were teens and she saw more of them, she realized that teenagers are just pitiful, with their braces and pimples and self-esteem problems. Then she felt sorry for them and loved them, trying to be grown up and cool, but just being so ridiculous.

So, as a teenager, is it cool to wear a tie and blazer to school? To join the chess club and mathletes? Just because a kid tries to dress in a "cool" way doesn't mean that they won't grow up to be productive members of society and laugh about the outfits they used to wear. But somehow if they are black and the outfits they choose are big sweatshirts then they are up to no good and deserve to be shot.

please point out where anyone has said a kid deseves to die for emulating the thug life. Grabbing a cops gun, or trying to pound someones face into a sidewalk. Deserve to die, maybe not, but justified, yes

Right, but I don't think NYT did it in this case and I don't think they do it in most cases. I think whoever jumped on it did so because NYT isn't a normal offender. Whereas if it were Fox news, this "expose" of their tactics wouldn't be news.

nyt apologized for it.

No doubt there are many who embrace the term, as do others who use the n-word as a term of endearment towards each other. That doesn't make it right nor should it make it acceptable. As adults it is our job to point out these things to the younger generation, or as seen here, even to the older ones.

I don't belieeve that anyone denies the common and perhaps frequent use of a certain word - however big a misnomer it may be. I believe what is being questioned here is the impaired judgment of those who don't see anything wrong with such practices.

Those that use the word thug to describe any black teenager obviously have other problems, those people will never change. My point is about the percentage of the black population that do embrace this lifestyle. There are plenty of them out there. There are also plenty of wannabees out there too, they dress and act the part, but don't really do anything bad. It's human nature to want to categorize people into certain groups. I know plenty of people that refer to white kids as "punks" or 'white trash", no matter what they know about them as people, but more so their appearance. If a person doesn't want to be associated with a negative stigma, then it's that persons responsibility to do something to make sure it doesn't happen.

There you go. They say that is was poor writing that missed the mark, not a grand conspiracy to paint someone a certain way, and I agree.

what is sad, is that they caved to pressure and did not have the sack, to say. Yes we said he was no Angel and we meant it, cuase he wasn't.

That can't possibly be. There surely must be some obscure reason, so secret that everyone knows about it... The NYT is part of 'it', don't you know?

I certainly get the whole wanting to fit in thing. When I was a teenager it was blue jeans, a black leather jacket and a pack of smokes that was cool. We had basically 3 groups, the jocks, the motor heads and the geeks. I kinda fit two of those groups because I played sports but cars and motors were my passion, so I went with the leather jacket, jeans and smoked Marlboros. There was a 'trouble maker"/"punk" stigma that came with dressing and acting like that, I was fully aware of it and I embraced it. It would be hypocritical to scoff at someone that pointed that out because it was true. Sure it was a dumb kids phase and I grew out of it. But my friends and I all had that "trouble maker"/"punk" label and it was our responsibility to grow up and get on with our lives. Most of us did, some of us didn't.

I try very hard not judge people by just their looks, but sometimes we are not in a position to know anymore about them and are forced to go with what we have.

FYI, I was in the chess club. :o:lol:
