The New York Times called Michael Brown "no angel." Here's how it described serial killers.

Brown was indeed "no angel." Okay, but would the New York Times have chosen this term — which is commonly used to describe miscreants and thugs — if the victim had been white?

What teen is an "angel"? My son is. As is my daughter. At times. Other times, I find myself looking around to see who is laughing behind my back, sure it's satan himself for fooling me into thinking I am their father, when in fact, it's HIS kids.

Whether a kid is white or black, the meaning of thug is the same. A criminal. I tell my kids to do the right thing, that I don't want them growing up to be a thug. Now, I may be a bit delusional at times, and sometimes I go to sleep and forget what I was saying yesterday, but I can say with 100% certainty that I have never said that to my kids because I don't want them turning black on me....

But the thug title is reserved exclusively for black teens. If Charlie Sheen died today, do you think they would say here's lies Charlie Sheen, he was no angel? That man did drugs, beat women, shot his ex-wife, and destroys property. As Ricky pointed out, that's on a Monday, what does he do on New Year's Eve? But have you ever heard anyone call him a thug? Robin Williams had domestic violence and drug use in his life, yet his eulogy won't touch on that.

The dude was a teenager. They do stupid shyt. We have members here that I'll wager were more dangerous when they were that age(some still act that way now) but they're not considered thugs.

BS Marvin. We covered this earlier, in either this thread or another, where you tried to say the same thing. In YOUR mind, it's used only for blacks. I am sure that in looking out for it, you see it used for blacks more than whites. Thug = criminal. Thug <> color. Memorize that, there will be a quiz later. :)

As for eulogies "touching on thugness", I bet you not one single eulogy of a black person does it either. Who would do such a thing, unless a person wrote their own in jest? Brown's family prolly sees him as an angel, in spite of how the shooting went down, and that is as it should be. Doesn't matter what the world as a whole thinks, it's their kid, and they SHOULD only put good things in a eulogy.

Thug was a term I remember from my youth and in a white society.

The first time I have seen it relevanced only to black is in this thread.

As an aside it has an Indian origin.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Quote an article that uses a thug for a white person. It's not used to describe a white criminal. Even mass shooters are called by their names. Not thugs.

A thug is a violent criminal. You can't get more violent than a shooting. Yet there isn't a single white mass shooter called a thug.

Mucho brownie points for the first person who looks up the origins of the word thug and the circumstances under which it got adopted into the English language.

OED says that it was a band of Indian robbers who would assassinate their victims by strangulation. They were generally suppressed by 1810 and the word was transformed its modern and more general meaning.

Not sure really how that helps in understanding the current racial connotations of the word, but gimme cookie.

It does not have the connotation in the UK, but may well have been more common in usage much earlier.
