Hello everyone, I just arrived in the US a week ago, my spouse and I are planning to go to Canada and visit some friends there, my question is I don't have my SSN yet, my passport has a stamp from POE, what do I need to go to Canada or am I even allowed to leave the country even if I don't have my SSN yet?

You do not need an SSN to travel, you need it to get a job. It is recommended that you apply 10 days after arrival, however, not applying will not stop from traveling.

Yeah I don't know what the person above me is talking about, but that isn't right.

When you apply for AOS, you need to apply for your EAD and also Advanced Parole. AP will allow you to travel outside the US while you are awaiting your Green Card. The EAD and AP will generally arrive approx 2-3 months after you apply for AOS.

So long story short, you can't go visit your friends in Canada until after you have your AP. Incentive to get cracking on sending in your AOS application.

You comment is correct for a person who enters the U.S. on a K-1 visa. It is however not accurate for a person who enters the U.S. on a IR-1/CR-1.

With a IR-1/CR-1 there is no adjustment of status. The stamp in the passport that they receive at POE serves as a one year temporary Green Card.

The actual Green Card should arrive in the mail 1 to 3 months from entry or when processing fee is paid, which ever is later.

My mistake, I looked at the first responder's TL, not the OPs!

Your stamp is enough to go to Canada and come back without problems. US permanent residents do not require visa to Canada and you'll be ok to re-enter US with your stamp. No need for SSN at all as it has nothing to do with immigrations.

It is not where I breathe but where I love that I live.

For future reference, please read OP's question and respond accordingly, giving wrong information could confuse OP.
