Name Changes.

Hi all, Tim here.

I'm moving over soon and the topic of conversation currently with my fiancee is Surnames. Brandi would like to have a double barrelled surname, is there anyone out there that could mop up some confusion as to what the process would be to change my name when we are applying for adjustment of status? would it affect the visa in anyway, seeing as i the beneficiary am the male. and typically the males name is taken on.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-20-names-marriage_N.htm seems to indicate that only seven states (which? still looking...) allow a man to change his surname due to the marriage as easily as a woman can. It will depend upon the state law of wherever you intend to live, I imagine, as to how difficult this process will be, and whether you are lucky enough to be in one of those seven states.

Worst case scenario: you can file for a formal name change with the local court, and I'm sure it will be approved in a very simple proceeding.

It's a noble idea, but what a hassle if both names are long. You won't fit into computer databases so the name will be truncated. People who are typesetting lists or invitations will hate you. (How many times have I cursed the Alvarez-Calderon family because It screws up column widths). Your kids will be struggling to write out that huge name in Kindergaten and first grade. (Yes, I was a teacher).

If your wife wants to hang on to her maiden name, tell her to use it as a middle name. Mary Jones Smith.

Just giving you a hard time. Of course do what she wants.
