I know money transefers have been brought up before, but does anyone know if they'll change CAD to USD at the border? The reason I ask is my credit union dosesn't accept foreign currency deposits. They recommended having an account with a larger commercial bank for this. My fiancee said she'd make withdraws from her account in US funds, but I don't want to walk around with that much cash on hand. I guess I could see if her bank (TD Bank) could give her a check in Canadian funds when she closes it out. Thanks.

Why not use your ATM card and take advantage of the dollars daily depreciation :P

Her ATM doesn't work in the States and she'll still need to close her account. Where in Delco are you? I'm in Media.

Springfield so we are almost neighbours

I know that commerce will open an account for her with her passport as ID no need for a SS # and they will accept a foreign currency deposit if that helps.

Can she not get a cashiers check from her Canadian bank drawn in $US ???

Thanks for the tip about Comerce! We're going to look into the option of a $US check/money order from her bank.

How about you get a Custom House account and you can do an electronic funds transfer to get the money from your bank to hers with the exchange... NEVER, EVER exchange your money at an international border crossing if you can help it...

Second Zyggy, have used custom house numerous times over the past yr and works like a charm and with a good exchange rate, and no fees!!! 3-4 Business days for a transaction to complete, so its not instantanoues!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
