Green Card in the mail???

Wow that is crazy. I would try to look up the person it was supposed to go to and give them a call. If it is their’s then send it to them. It is illegal to open it but maybe you could make an info pass and go open it in front of them?

What makes you say it is illegal? Who knows maybe the correct green card was inside...we will never know now?

t

it is a federal crime to open mail that is not addressed to you, even if it was received at your home.

 , it is a crime. I like the idea of making an info pass appt to open that mail infront of them. But call the actual recipient too.

Maybe technically it is a crime. However, I know what I would have done. Where is the harm or foul?

"The Postal Inspector's office told me quite

frankly that such complaints seldom result in fines or jail time,

unless it can be proven that fraud or theft was the motive, or actual

economic damages resulted from the incident."

Umm. . . right, well I guess the key word in your phrase would be 'seldom' - therefore it CAN happen to get you into trouble.

I would take the unopened envelope to the Post Office and ask them what to do. Once USCIS puts it in the mail, it's the responsibility of the USPS to ensure it gets to the right place.

Anyhow, I just wrote on the outside of the evelope "Sent to wrong address, please forward to addressee" and dropped it in the mailbox on the corner.

You did the correct thing. My only point was that the argument could be made that it in fact was your mail just improperly labeled. You will never know now since it is no longer in your possesion.

Good luck resolving the rest of the issue

Well, here we are still waiting for the GC to come in the mail. I know some people here who had their interview after us, and have already rcvd their GC.

Now, I have a bad feeling about this, and am pretty damn sure USCIS sent the GC to the wrong person.

If I call the 800 number, they will only tell me to give it the full 60 days as stated in the notice.

If I make an infopass appt, it's gonna kill my whole friggin day......

Infopass is the only way you are gonna get this sorted out.... I had to do that when I did not receive my greencard.... you need to know for sure that the card was issued and find out if it has been returned.... if they have not got it back then you are going to have to file a I-90 and pay the fees for a new card and new biometrics.... it is only free if they have got the card returned if like mine it just never showed up you have to pay and it takes about 6 months to get the new card...

Go make that infopass...

We keep checking the mailbox, and nothing so far. I called the USCIS 800 number and pushed about 40 buttons before finally getting a real live person. He was actually very nice and responsive to our problem. He said he did not see in messages in is system that the actual GC was mailed, but only the "Welcome" letter had been mailed. He noted a letter dated jan 12th that the production was ordered for the card. Whatever that means????!!!!!

Anyhow, he said he would send a notice to the proper dept that we had not yet received the GC. Let's see if that actually does any good.....At least my wife has her AP and EAD, so she can travel and work without problem.

I won't even consider making the infopass until we return from our trip to visit my wife's family in March this year.

Your AP becomes invalid after AOS approval... for your wife to travel outside the US she will need to go and get the I-551 stamp put in her passport... this is good for work and travel.

The EAD and AP are no longer valid...

Kez

[/quote/

I have heard this before, but can someone tell me where this is stated either on the USCIS website or cited in the regulations? The AP letter states it is valid until Jan 2008.

So, we are SOL until we actually receive the GC??? that is definitely FUBAR......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :help:

I would've opened it in case the card inside was correct and if it wasn't then I'd put it in a nother envelope and mail it to the person without a return addy. whether it was legal or not. no harm done. I wouldn't take the chance of the correct GC being in there and I let it go.
