Wal-Mart accused of consumer fraud

Wal-Mart has given people another reason to be up in arms about the mega-retailer. They have been accused of mislabeling products and produce as organic, when they are not.

In September The Cornucopia Institute surveyed Wal-Mart stores around the country and "discover widespread problems with signage misrepresenting nonorganic food as 'organic.'"

The Institute filed a complaint with the USDA but has found, four months later after revisiting Wal-Mart stores, that many of the deceptive signs remain. (You can see photos on their website.)

"The USDA is examining the watchdog's claims, while the Wisconsin authorities are examining Wal-Mart's practices and those of other supermarkets within the state," the Independent reported.

"If unchecked, Wal-Mart's alleged misrepresentation of organic food, along with their procurement practices, and cheapening the meaning behind the organic label, could endanger the livelihoods of many farmers and family business owners who have labored to build organics into a lucrative $16 billion a year industry," said Mark Kastel, co-director of the Wisconsin-based Institute.

Wal-Mart announced last spring that they were adding organic produce to their shelves. The move signaled a growing trend in the corporatization of organic foods that many believe will hurt small-scale organic growers.

We can now add one more on the growing list of reasons not to shop at Wal-Mart.

I used to just avoid WalMart because their stores are cramped and messy and I didn't approve of their business practices. I would only go there if it was too far to go to Target or somewhere else. Now I've got a full WalMart ban going for a few months. I don't care what the price is or how far I've got to drive I'm never purchasing anything from WalMart again.

By the way, it has nothing to do with this organic incident. That's just something else to hate that company for. WalMart is the

One thing about the mislabeled organic products.... organic products usually cost alot more than your average so Im wondering what sort of apology etc walmart will do for its customers who might have purchased these items.

Probably nothing but Im an optimist so will say it would be nice for them to do something.

Adding 18 billion per year to our trade deficit with China keeps me away more than anything. Walmart doesn't give a sh!t about Americans.

I also avoid Walmart due to their business practises. When I heard they had organic food for prices nearly the same as non-organic, I thought something was fishy...

Darn tootin! To heck with what other people think of them! If it can save a couple of bucks why the heck shouldn't you support Saddam Hussein shop at Wal-Mart? Human rights? Bah! Gimme my low cost ammo and smokes, and mislabeled safe goods. They show what America was built on, hard working Ma and Pa stores that care about the community low priced ####### made by foreigners. And that's all I really deserve for shopping there anyway good enough for me!

Never mind the non-compete clause in perpetuity for the real estate (you know, after they've saturated the market and shut out all competitors, and then start closing stores to consolidate......and the building can never again be used for any commercial business that might compete with the glorious 'Mart)

And, of course, I just looooove how my tax dollar stretches all the way to subsidize their employees! More bang for the buck! Living wage my #######!

I love Wallmart and will always shop there. The low prices and the large selection makes it the best retailer in the US. Wallmart has done more for the working class than ANY government agency. They employ thousands, they let people on a limited budget get the most for their money and it is the greatest success story of all time. Screw the libs that hate wallmart. It's just jealousy.

Oh, organic food is for sissies. (ducks) Give me the bad for you, good tasting, cheap, factory processed stuff!

Gary....what industry are you in? (just curious as I'm sure they'd be interested that you've just told the internet that if they get mad at fraud they're just jealous. Imagine how quick you'll be having to take a 3x5 card with "kreddit Kard" written on it as payment....and that's just the beginning of fraudulent activities you're tacitly condoning!)

Imagine the possibilities! Yay for fraud! Fraud is great! Heck, tell your consular officer how much you love fraud! They'll love it!

Fraud Shmaud! Organic foods are fraud all to itself. Just another way to jack up the prices. I don't give a damn about it.

The libs are not on Wallmarts butt because of organic food fraud, they don't like it because a man named Sam Walton went from rags to riches. The libs always want to tear down the winners. This is just the latest shot. Look what they tried to do to Microsoft.

The sale of Chinese product is not limited to Walmart. How about JC Penney, Dillards, Home Depot, Lowes, Macy's, Bed Bath & Beyond, many furniture stores, etc.............

It has become a running joke between my wife and I. Gee, I wonder where this item was made? China? We actually get excited to find something made elsewhere.
