Hi. I am not a Canadian citizen. Canada does not need a visa for us permanent residents. I am planning a trip to canada via road. Will they accept my expired gc and current i797 extension notice. I know the us Will on the way back.

2006 - Entered US on F-1
2009 - COS to H-1
2011 - Married USC

Conditional GC Process:
04/2012 - Concurrent I-130 petition / I-485 AOS / I-765 EAD / I-131 AP sent
35 days to biometrics, 73 days to EAD/AP combo card, 85 days to interview, 96 days to Conditional Green Card

04/2014 - Eligible for ROC

06/2014 - I-751 package filing joint with spouse sent

5 days to extension,37 days to biometrics, 172 days to CSC transfer, 247 days to Green Card

04/2015 - Eligible for Citizenship

09/2015 - N-400 package filing on basis of USC spouse sent

29 days to biometrics, 105 days to interview, 147 days to oath and US citizenship

~ 9 years and 6 months from first entry to US citizenship

You would be ok, it would be a lil process though, I just came back from canada, traveled with my expired gc and extended letter, they were confused as to when the one year extension was from, whether it's from the date on the gc or the date on the receipt, either way I went got through and I'm back in NY, I flew thought but I'm sure it's the same as driving, I know people that drove over with the letter and expired gc, good luck

yeah i know that coming back to the US should be easy because US border controls will know their own letter, but i wanted to make sure that canada recognizes the letter (which is current by any date).

Several people here have been denied because they don't have a current green card. Canada does not recognize the extension letter consistently if at all.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

thats reassuring, i dont think i have the time from now to my trip to go get the visa. and its by land so im going to drive up and give them my letter and see what happens.

I drove to Canada with my expired GC and letter and had no problem at all. I am a Canadian citizen. I crossed at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo and I have a Nexus pass. Usually I get waved right through but this time they asked for my GC and I gave them that with my letter and they barely glanced at it and then waved me through. There was absolutely no problem.
