What if I-134 gets lost in the mail or does not arrive in time

Has anyone been in the situation where your I-134 was lost in the mail en route to the foreign country, or is delayed for some reason? Despite paying a small fortune, it looks like the USPS may have lost my I-134/documentation, or it may be held up in customs.

Any personal experience would be appreciated (I realize that the degree to which an embassy might accommodate such a situation may be specific to that embassy, but for context we'll be dealing with the Rio de Janeiro consulate).
