We're not a 'post-racial' society. We're the 'innocent until proven racist' society

I still believe it is up to one to make a difference in his/her life to break out of the poverty vicious cycle.

It is not like the minorities are not given access to government welfare, free schools, study loan to better themselves.

Some countries like Malaysia, give huge privileges (or more rights) to the majority malay race (Bumiputera), yet they still fare worse than the Chinese / Indian.

I agree with the first sentence. It IS the responsibility of the individual to make the best out of their own life - educationally and professionally. The issue I would say is that a person's circumstances and background can grow to define them (in the same way that having an alcoholic or violent parent can make the children that way too) - especially if the community they come from is insular and the people in it feel disenfranchised from the rest of society.

I think the bolded sentence is an example of what I've been talking about - those things are available, but what is lacking is a real understanding of the experience of the people you're talking - what their backgrounds are, what their social outlook is and their day-to-day experiences.

Now we're coming to some common ground. There is a huge problem with economic inequality in this country. How to fix that, I don't know. IMO this is an economic issue, more than a racial one. But I do agree with you something needs to be done about it. This is the real conversation that needs to take place, not pages and pages of posts about some one-off shooting in Missouri.

On one hand it's easy to say to folks, "get off your azz and get a job." That kind of talk doesn't help anything, and I'm probably guilty of saying things similar to that. OTOH it's just as easy to say "I'm black, so I'm screwed" Personally I think the black leaders have more to do with that attitude than anyone else with all their victimhood peddling. There needs to be more programs where businesses are involved with the poor and preparing them for the real world. I saw an awesome piece on 60 minutes a coupe weeks ago where companies were doing just that although on a pretty small scale. Programs like that need to be expanded and encouraged. It's a win win for everyone involved..

The issues are intertwined certainly.

If the US were truly a colour-blind nation you wouldn't need leader figures to speak for the black community. That you have such people indicates that there are a lot of people who feel that they aren't part of the establishment.

I'd argue that these "leader figures" only care about keeping the racial divisiveness alive and well. It's their whole reason for existence. The race hustlers are part of the problem, not part of the solution. Whenever something like this Ferguson thing happens they roll into to town, whip up a frenzy, and then when it's all over they split. I wonder how many of them have been back to Sanford, FL since that trial ended to help out the racial minorities. Probably zero. They're on to making their next pile of cash off the next dead black person.

Don't forget rallying for people to kill children and leave their bodies on the border to discourage illegal immigration.

Be careful Val. There are some who completely believe in the KKK's way of stopping children from illegally crossing the border.

Another problem with the conversation. Make an argument based on some fringe organization that hasn't been relevant for years. If there's a few nuts running around with pointy white hats that pretty much everyone has marginalized, that equates to racism being alive and well. Next.

Becuse when you give people enough to survive comfortably. I.e. food, water, shelter, Color TV etc. There is no incentive to do better

I take a day off to go to USCIS and this place days. Is it a Govt holiday, none of the day shift is with us ?

Guess how many Caucasians, were working in USCIS.. ?
