Hey, all. I'm in the United States with a Work Authorization card and a pending Adjustment of Status, and I'm now working to get certified as a teacher in the United States, specifically Kansas. As a result, I have to get my Bachelor's in Education evaluated through a global credential evaluation service.

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with any form of credential evaluation services, such as the ones listed on this website: www.naces.org/members.htm

I'm scared, because my initial research into these sorts of companies has been horrifying. All I have seen are litanies of complaints through the better business bureau, a world of shitty Yelp reviews, and extremely stiff price tags to go with it.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? If so, which company did you use, and how did it work out for you?

The Employer will usually determine the company to use.

Feel free to PM me if you want. I'm certified to teach in British Columbia and have spent the past year working to get my certification transferred to Washington State. Thankfully here they treat BC like 'out of state' and I don't need to worry about translating my English paperwork. That being said I've still had to pay money, get background checks and take 3 multi hour long tests on every subject. I was supposed to get my certificate in the mail last month but still haven't received it so I need to call and ask them what the holdup is about. FWIW I did get a substitute teacher's permit almost right away so there is that at least.

I would recommend calling your state's teacher certification line and asking them some more specific questions as to what is all needed. I found the WA website very helpful but I was still confused on parts and spent some time on the phone. I have a sneaking suspicion Kansas will be less familiar with Canada though....

Long story short I didn't need to get my credentials evaluated since I was treated as out-of-state but I looked into that for quite awhile too.

I am so jealous. I've already checked with my state, Kansas, and I have a step-by-step offering of what I have to do, which includes credential evaluation. Moreover, I have to take the same tests, assuming you took the Praxis test.

Might I ask which subject you teach?

Ugh so you have to do that huh... that's unfortunate. :/ I teach/taught elementary school K-7 in BC. I took the Praxis test - the Washington version. There was a long math and language arts test - I think it took me almost 5 hours to write. Then I had to take the two elementary education subtests as my specialty - one was math/science/health and the other was english/history/arts. Each of those tests was about 2 hours. They had sample questions and something similar to IRPs to study with and that helped me a lot. Thankfully the sections involving inches and US presidents weren't toooo bad and I put a lot of effort into prep on those!
