Dear all,

I have a quick question. I plan to change my legal name when I go through naturalization. As we all know after legal name change, lots of accounts need to be changed accordingly, SSN, bank account, etc.

Based on what I read on Social security website, and bank website, they all require a certified copy of legal name change.

My question is that for whoever go through legal name change during your naturalization, can you ask for multiple certified copies of your legal name change on the day you oath? or you have to contact your local court later on to get multiple certified copy of your legal name change in order to change you SSN, bank, credit card, etc.

Please advise and share your name changing and other related information change process, Thanks a bunch!

You can apply for official copies at the court that approved the name change. USCIS will get a judge to approve and sign your name change; they can't approve it any other way.

When you take your oath, you'll get one name change certificate along with your naturalization certificate. Don't leave the ceremony without it, because it's important.

To get more copies, you can ask which court that is at the interview or oath ceremony or when you get your name change document you can sea which court has stamped it (or which judge has signed it and look up which court he/she belongs to). Go to that court, pay the certified copy fee and fill out a request.

Many courts have the forms and fees posted on their websites.

By the way, while it's a good idea to get multiple copies, almost all the places you mentioned should only need a photocopy of your name change certificate. Other places may need to see an original when you go in person, but they'll only keep a photocopy. The only place that will definitely take the original is the passport office, but they will also take your original naturalization certificate and will return both documents to you later. So it's not all that urgent to get multiple certified copies.
