Your income taxes change to single the year your divorce is final.

If you divorced in 2013 then you file as single on your return for the 2013 year.

If you get married in 2014 then 2014 taxes would be joint, or married filing separately.

The only reason you would amend income tax from single to married would be if you made a mistake and filed as a single person but were actually married....in other words you did it wrong in the first place. Why would that happen??

Your taxes owed could change quite a bit.

You need to file 1040X. There is no fee. Should take about 8 weeks or so, may be less considering this is off season at IRS, I mean it's not April or May when they have so many tax returns to work on.

Taxes would not change if you go from single to 'Married filing separately', it's the same.

What the heck are you talking about? Many married folks file single (like the OP) while spouse is in their country or they file Married filing separate we than amend our taxes when the immigrant gets here and gets SSN. It is allowed.

Where did divorce and all that come in.

Hello guys. How long does it take to amend income tax from single to married. And does this attract fees ?

If you used a tax software to do it by yourself, it shouldn't take too long at all.

It might take little longer if you are trying to add your spouse's income.

And you might pay less tax when filing as "married"...
