Im not trying to step on toes, but its not racist. I mean think about it, your coming to a new country to LIVE, not relatively visit, and you can barely speak the language. I would think it would be hard to live. I remember before i moved to romania i worked my butt off to learn romanian mainly bc i didnt want to look retarded trying to grocery shop and not know any romanian. I mean i am in their country after all, i cant ask them all to understand ME when i am the one who is the outsider. It is smart to learn the language of the country your planning to live in, not only is it going to be easier for you to live, but easier for ppl who live there to get to know you. Thats not racists, its common sence.

and with her joke, yes ive seen ppl who barely speak english get all pissed off at americans who dont speak their language or who cant understand them bc their english is so impossibly broken, like it is our fault we dont understand them. why fluk us?? we are not the ones asking someone else to understand us talk. so yes i get mad over that.

But did you speak Romanian absolutely perfectly? And with no accent at all? When you spoke were people appreciative of the effort that you made to communicate with them? Or did they roll their eyes at you and give you an attitude?

I understand your point, but I have seen people be outright rude and degrading to people who speak very decent English, solely because they can detect an accent. I would say that is surely bigotry at work.

And i agree with you! Yes i spoke it pretty well, it didnt take me long to learn, and since i already spoke russian it wasnt very hard with some words. I deffinatly didnt have any problems unless i couldnt pronounce a word, and then my husband would help me then inform whomever that i was american, and i got praised for actually learning the language. It felt good.
