FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — County police in riot gear and armored tanks gave way to state troopers walking side-by-side with thousands of peaceful protesters after nearly a week of unrest and mounting public tension in the St. Louis suburb where an unarmed black teen was shot by a city police officer.

The dramatic shift Thursday came after Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon assigned oversight of the protests to the state Highway Patrol, stripping local police from the St. Louis County Police Department of their authority after four days of clashes with furious crowds protesting the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

"All they did was look at us and shoot tear gas," said Pedro Smith, 41, who has participated in the nightly protests. "This is totally different. Now we're being treated with respect."

I might have mentioned this before. I grew up in a small town called Wrightsville, GA. we were the epic center of racial unrest in GA back in the late 70's early 80's . Things get crazy, when people are in their mob mentality mind.

From what I recall, Blacks in w'ville lead a protest of the local Sheriff and calling for jobs etc. The local rednecks showed up and attacked the mob with chains etc. beat many of them good. Of course nothing was done, to the local guys, everyone knew real well. It went south from there. We had National media, all the major players in the civil rights movements. Klan, J.B. Stoner. It was quite a mess.

I'm so glad I missed this era. With my mouth I wouldn't have lived to see 30, let alone 40.

Well that may not have gotten you killed, but your love of white women, surely would have been your demise.

You mean to tell me that when you treat people like people, they tend to behave like people? And when you treat people like animals they might behave in kind? More importantly, you mean to tell me that they just figured this out in MO now? Wow.

You mean to tell me that when you treat people like people, they tend to behave like people? And when you treat people ^ like animals they might behave in kind do dumb shite? More importantly, you mean to tell me that they just figured this out in MO now? Wow.

Ahem. The looters reacted first, before anyone called them animals, if memory serves correctly.

If you are referring to Brown being shot for (perhaps, still waiting) no reason, well, even dogs don't get shot much for no reason. Except by cops...
