I haven't smoked. Been plenty of temptation though, and I'm chewing a strawberry twizzler as we speak (just what I DONT want to be doing...but chewing a straw much of the time.) We went to my mom/dads for supper tonight....fresh fish and chips...and my dad told us he just found out he has prostate cancer. It's highly treatable, thank God, as it's early stage and one of those types you *can* treat more easily, but the C word isn't a word you want to hear related to a loved one in *any* way, shape, or form, ya know??? Thinking of that has been making me want to smoke in and of itself...

I just wish this "oh...I'm just gonna do such and so and then I'll sit down and have a ciggarette...." feeling would pass!!! Every little while that thought comes into my head for like 1/2 second before I go..."oh yeah...I'm quitting" ARGH!!! M.

You're doing so great! Remember those feelings will eventually pass. :) Keep it up!

Sorry to hear about your dad, but as you found out, it is very treatable. So many men have prostate cancer and no problems beating the cancer.

God willing he'll be just fine after treatment.

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

I quit smoking four years ago after being a pack-a-day smoker for about 20 years. Here are a few observations:

1. The patch and similar devices help with the cravings for awhile, but they quickly become a crutch. It's better to get it over with. Use the patch for a week or two, and carry one with you for emergencies, but forget about their eight week program. It only prolongs the agony.

2. The worst of the nicotine withdrawal will last for about a week. Then the cravings begin to diminish slowly.

3. It will take about six months to completely rid yourself of the mental desire to have a cig.

4. The easiest way to trip up and start smoking again is to think that you've got it beat, and you can control it, and have just one cigarette that you borrowed from a co-worker. It's not that way. Half an hour after that "one" cigarette, you'll be out buying another pack.

5. Remember how expensive smoking is. Keep a paper in your pocket that says how much money you will save in a year and the great vacation you will take with that cash. I went on a ski trip to Canada. It rocked!!

6. You'll probably fail at this five or six times before you really conquer it. The important thing is persistence.

Strawberry Twizzlers are much better than Marlboro Lights....

Sorry to hear about your dad. But like you said - it's highly treatable and they caught it early. That in itself is something to be very thankful of. Strawberry Twizzlers for all!!

For anyone who might be interested at all...just thought I'd update you. I'm still quitting!! Haven't had anyand damn proud of myself too, I might add!! This has been the toughest of all the tries, and I'm (self analysis here..NEVER good... ) I think it's because this time I'm really, really determined that this is going to be IT, and I kind of feel a little lost like... *small voice* you mean I'm never, ever, ever going to smoke againnnnnnn? Ok, a bit exaggerated, but that is what I mean! GRR. I found this GREAT forum tonight though, called freedom..it's an MSN group. You have to be 72 hours quit to join and cold turkey quitting and if you relapse you're banned. They are VERY serious about it and it's just what I need. (of couse, it's totally honor system...like they're gonna know if you relapse!!) JUST what I'm needing at the moment though, and tons of great articles by a man who is active on the forum and is a smoking cessation speaker..and he does quit clinics, etc. Thanks for all the support here everyone; it's been great...and I downloaded this new nifty little tool tonight too..love it! :) M. (below)

I have been quit for 4 Days, 16 hours, 57 minutes and 55 seconds (4 days). I have saved $18.11 by not smoking 94 cigarettes. I have saved 7 hours and 50 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 1/22/2007 6:45 AM

Good for you Michele, but I gotta say that's canny harsh if you relapse you get banned....I mean what if ya fall off the wagon and need support to quit again? I think that's missing the point of a support group, lol

Woot! Go Michelle!

That's so awesome.

I'm close to my 3 month quit anniversary myself, although it feels like at least 3 years since I had that last cig.

Where'd you download the tool from? I keep having to log onto quitnet.com to see my quit gadget info.
