Negative Interview Experiences

Well it took me 16.5 years to get here so I consider it one of the most important interviews of my life. To each their own and each person's experience is different but I wore a suit, treated her and the situation with respect and was treated respectfully and kindly in turn. You get what you give in this life.

To be clear, I never implied that an immigration officer, or anyone else for that matter, should be treated with disdain. I fully agree that courtesy should always be extended, but not solely in regard for the other person's station, but that you sincerely respect the person. Clearly it's not true that in this life you give what you get which would imply you believe that the posters who complained of having negative interview experiences must have done something negatively themselves to earn it.

Other than the suit and the suggestion of a single interview triumphing all others, I mostly agreed with your remark.

The interview can be intimidating for sure but mine was uneventful and my officer couldn't have been more professional and friendly. Here is my advice, for what it is worth. Be respectful. Be professional. Dress in a suit (I wore a navy blue pant suit). Be prepared with documents. Be open and honest and sincere. Be nice to them and they will be nice back. We managed to create some friendly camaraderie and I commiserated with her about some really bulky files on her desk. I'm not saying suck up, but I am saying see them as a person too who is just doing their job. Treat it like a job interview - the most important job interview of your life - and assume that all will be fine, be positive - and it should be.

I'm not saying some of them aren't jerks or having bad days.

I started the thread in reaction to a few recent posts here and figured it was obvious that I was mainly talking about a scenario when the immigration officer displays a disrespectful behavior or acts in a intimidating way for NO APPARENT reason.

It goes without saying that one should be honest, sincere, respectful, professional.. all that jazz.

However, "be nice to them and they will be nice back" did not seem to be the case in the stories a few people shared.

Er...no, they cannot do whatever they want. Unless you like to lie down and let yourself be trampled on, there is almost always recourse as long as you can be bothered to seek it out.

I think there's a big difference between consular interviews and interviews at field offices in the US.

In both cases you can end up with an unpleasant interviewer, but at a consulate you have considerably fewer avenues of appeal.
