Welcome! I too met my hubby at the hotel where he worked and we had absolutely no problems with the process. We applied for the K1 because it is faster if you have the money for it. The marriage route is cheaper but it does take longer. The downfall to the K1 is that your fiancée won't be able to work or drive (depending on the state) until he gets his EAD card which is averaging 2-3 months after you file your adjustment of status after you get married. So he will have to be ok with being cooped up in the house for a while and you definitely want to make sure he understands that! It was a struggle for my fiancée who was so used to being so independent to be cooped up in the house not able to drive not able to go anywhere. But it goes fast. Now he's wishing for those days instead of going to work

As for the lawyer, don't do it. It's a waste of money. Everyone on here is very helpful and can pretty much answer any question you have or knows where to find the info! The process is pricey enough as it is. Like someone else said, save that money to use towards vacations or your process!

What is faster, is seldom the only consideration. Whether somebody would be wise to secure professional assistance, cannot reliably be based on the choices of others, particularly choices of others who have not yet completed the process successfully. Beware of advice from strangers telling you what they know about your needs, when they know little about you, your abilities, circumstances or priorities.

It is against the terms of service of Visa Journey to advise members not to obtain legal advice. Why moderators continue to allow this behavior baffles me.

If you are referring to my comments... I didn't advise her NOT to seek counsel... if you read slower or with more attention perhaps you would see that she said that she does not feel the need to.... NOR has the money to hire an attorney. So why would I panic her or make her worry or suggest she must hire a lawyer?

I was letting her know that she can easily do it on her own as many of us have. From what I've experienced personally and also read NUMEROUS examples on VJ it seems we do all the work anyway and the lawyer checks over it (and often MISSES things) and mails it off for you.... for that they get anywhere from a few hundred bucks to a few grand... So unless you have a tricky case.. why waste the money?

As for your snarky comment about not finishing the process you are astute in that fact... but you are quite ignorant to notice (even though it's IN MY SIGNATURE) that the lawyer I hired; who cashed the check in October 2012 and in whose office I signed the last paper the FIRST WEDNESDAY Of Nov 2012 hindered the processing of our case by more than TWO MONTHS by NOT sending in my petition and first blamed the Holiday mail overload.... then blamed the slowness of the Govt. and kept giving me excuses and/or ignoring my calls, texts and emails... until I finally called the Florida Bar and wrote a letter demanding all of my money back in 10 days or proof that he sent in our paperwork that I finally at day 7 of the 10 days got notification that my petition had been received by USCIS!!!

During this process my then VERY HEALTHY Fiance lost his full time job and later his apartment so he went to live in a mold filled storage room at a family member's home while we waited for our interview date!! He became sick twice back-to-back with really bad flu and later contracted Tuberculosis and has since had to undergo SIX MONTHS of treatment after our interview followed by TWO more months of waiting and testing to obtain final medical clearance...

my recent response above helps explain briefly what happened but no he's not quite here yet... Coming Soon Ojala!!!

But Our process was severely delayed and in that time they started the whole transferring offices fiasco.. (We were among the first batch of transfers in May 2013, when they had no clue what they were doing..)

Many bumps along our Journey but it has made our bond and commitment to each other and Our Relationship stronger...

I do say now though; if I had known the future I would have done the spouse visa route... Just so he comes to to the US able to work and travel.... then we could do a Wedding/HoneyMoon cruise like we wanted... and then we could come home and find/start work like he';s been wanting and waiting for!! lol

For now we have to wait on top of our other waiting... but we have each other and will make our Life Together very soon God Guiding and Helping...

Hello Everyone,

I am starting my Journey and I have a lot of questions and I really need some guidance. Im also new to forums period so if this is not where I ask questions please let me know.

I was born and raised in the US in Virginia. I met my fiance while on vacation in the Bahamas, however he is Dominican. I am going to meet him for vacation in the DR in October and meet his family, etc. One question I have is it better to get married there and then apply to bring him as my husband or just do the fiance visa and marry once he is here with me? Also does anyone know since his address is in the Bahamas would he have his interview in the Bahamas or have to go back to Santo Domingo?

I had spoken with an attorney(which I cant afford) that told me that the DR is very skeptical of their men and that they can be hard on them while questioning them because they have a lot of fraud cases. So now my fiance is stressed out and wants me to get the attorney because he has it in his mind that attorney will make everything go smoother and quicker...Try telling a my fiance thats not the case, lol

Ive been gathering the info needed to start the paperwork but I need to decide if im doing the fiance visa or spouse visa once I come back in October. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.
