Although I did call to get my case number, I honestly still couldn't figure out what this number is for except for status check purpose.

I mean, I don't need it to file DS-160 and pay the fee and I have to wait for Packet 3 & 4 anyway in order to schedule medical exam and get a police clearance report.

Maybe it's country specific but the embassy will assign you an interview date after you mailed back the Packet 3.

Not for everyone. Germany for example allows you to schedule your own interview. & in some countries where there are many interviews taking place & the wait times are long, many will request an interview as soon as they get their Case # from NVC, knowing full well they still have much to do between now & the actual interview. This is to effectively speed up the entire process.

I called NVC yesterday and they have recieved our case. But yet not assigned case number. When should i call again for it? Do they assig it next day as i noticed in many timelines?

Should normally be no more than a few days.
