I-485 and A# for K-2

I am completing our forms and I am stumped for the A# for my wife's 2 children. My wife entered on K-1 and I have her number. The 2 kids entered as K-2, but I am unable to locate this number. Am I blind? Was an A# assigned to the kids? I am just trying to make sure I am not missing anything. Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

All K visa recipients have an alien number; it's a required part of the process for them to be issued with it when their visas are granted.

We couldn't find our K2's A# either. It wasn't on his visa. I left that blank.

The K-2 is a derivative visa and no petition was ever filed on their behalf. They adjust status as a derivative of the K-1 holder, and do not have their own A# until after filing for AOS. Leave the A# for the K-2 blank.

I believe that the alien numbers were already assigned by virtue of their visas being issued, but that alien numbers for K-2 recipients are not always included anywhere in documentation you receive.

I recall someone posting here about a similar issue a few months ago and I think they had to make an Infopass appointment to obtain the alien numbers, as they weren't anywhere on the visas or any USCIS documentation received.

If they are already assigned, they are never revealed to them on any of the documents they receive. Most just leave the A# blank on the K-2's forms without issue, or needing to make an infopass appointment to get an A# before applying.

When we filled out my K2 stepson's I-485 application, we left the A# blank, as that we had yet to receive it. It was not printed on his K2 visa. The first official documents we received that displayed his A# were the NOA1 receipts for AOS, AP, and EAD applications. As a matter of fact, we all commented at the time that now we knew his A#.

Leaving it blank seems the way to go then.

Kinda silly of them not to print them on the K-2 visa itself; there's really no reason not to if the numbers have already been assigned.

I agree. Not sure why they do not give them the K-2 A# until after they apply for AOS. I suppose because the government is always logical like that.

Sure, it would be nice to know. However, who can tell the sometimes weird actions of the USCIS? Bottom line, it is that way because after all it is their ball game, with their rules, their playing field, etc.

When you file I-485 AOS it will be printed on the NOA1. Until then just leave it blank.
