Auto insurance in NC

I saw a thread about this, but the most recent post was from 5 years ago. Wanted to see if there were any recent sort of opinions. This is specifically about NC because the laws vary state to state.

NC has the law where a foreign driver is listed as an "inexperienced" driver on insurance. To get insurance on one car (with both of us as drivers, me as the principle) we were quoted $100/month from Geico and $1500 for the year from Amica. I honestly was planning on paying half that since neither of us have ANYTHING on our records.

Anyone been through this recently? Is there another insurance company that we could call that might be more forgiving? And does anyone know how long we have to wait for this ridiculous "inexperienced" driver thing to go away? (my husband is 33, I mean geeze!)

My wife had the same issue. She got her license 3 years ago in NC and we were told that she would have to pay the inexperienced rate. We got the same answer from all of the insurance companies. Her insurance went down some after two years and finally now after 3 years it is back down to normal. It was like having a teenager on our account. Good luck.

OH GOD, that is just ridiculous.... I think I'll just wait til he gets his license and just add him. If they don't ask, I won't say anything.

But to get a license you have to show proof of insurance, at least here in NC.

you have to have proof to get the license?

if you don't have a car, what are getting insurance on ?

in maine you have to show proof of insurance to register a car, but it has nothing to do with getting your license.

Same in PA. My son is about to get his license and he doesn't have a car. He just needs ID. for now anyway. He doesn't need to show proof of insurance to get the license. The car he takes the test in needs to be insured... but only for the owner of the car. Not him

In NC, you have to have insurance to get a license. And it has to have your name on it.

I am in N.C. too. I think it's 3 years of high insurance then the prices will start to go down.

Will you get insurance under your car for your husband? And then when he buys his own car he can transfer the insurance to the new car?

I had a long conversation with Progressive about this and Progressive told me that it would be an issue for the first year as my husband would be considered the same as a first time driver but would drop in year two.

I would recommend shopping around. I have found HUGE differences in prices for car insurance in NC for the exact same address.

Geico and Amica are good, but also look at Progressive, Liberty Mutual, All State, State Farm, Nationwide.

BTW, transfer of insurance to new car? Been a while since my last marriage but if I recall, the insurance covers all people of driving age residing at same address for the cars they own. It doesn't matter who drives what car. You list both spouses and both cars on policy.

Thanks for the advice! When I called and chatted to Progressive the person I spoke to said we HAD to go under the same policy because we are married.

Just as a follow up - I just called Progessive because they forgot to change my last name on my policy. While on phone with them I asked for a quote to add him.

I do have one accident in 2012 so my current premium is 367 every 6 months. To add my husband, and not add a new car, will cost $1,800 every six months, so $3,600 a year and that's with a discount if I pay in full at each renewals. That, IMO, is NUTS.

You will need to be under the same policy but it's because you are in the same household and married.

Wow! That's insane! I guess I shouldn't complain about the $100/month I was quoted!
