I wonder if VJ will be missing a member?

Dallas police on Tuesday identified the man accused of shooting at officers and firefighters Monday in Far North Dallas as a 60-year-old Corinth resident who had no criminal history.

Police say Douglas Lee LeGuin espoused anti-government views to police, but have not yet found any definitive link between him and any specific anti-government groups or movements. There was also no clear link between LeGuin and the house where he turned up and allegedly began shooting at police.

LeGuin did tell a 911 call taker that he intended to occupy the Far North Dallas house as a sovereign nation for himself.

Maj. Jeff Cotner of the crimes against persons division said the whole incident was surreal.

“I’ve been here 32 1/2 years. This is bizarre,” he said.

Corinth Police Assistant Chief Greg Wilkerson said LeGuin’s wife called authorities about 1:30 p.m. Monday and reported that he was missing and hadn’t gone to work. The family member also told police that an AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition were missing from his home.

He said propane tanks were also missing from Leguin’s garage.

“Based on the information we had, we thought it was imperative that we try to locate the suspect as soon as possible,” Wilkerson said.

But later in the afternoon, police said LeGuin showed up at the house in the 5500 block of North 40th Place and knocked on the door. A nanny answered and LeGuin threatened her, Cotner said.

But, he added, “there is no indication that LeGuin tried to make entry into the home. We could all argue that he probably had the potential to go into the house if he really, really wanted to.”

Cotner credited the nanny with closing the door and hiding with an 8-year-old girl in a secure location inside the house. SWAT officers later went into the house to get them.

When Dallas firefighters drove by the house, LeGuin allegedly started shooting at them. He hit the fire truck at least twice, police said.

When police responded, he tried to ambush them, police said. Nobody was shot, and the officers began to go after LeGuin in the woods.

Police said LeGuin then called 911 and made anti-government statements. He also said his name was “Dougie Doug” and that he was from the nation of “Dougiestan,” which he said was a country he had just created.

He also said he was upset with Dallas police for “shooting the mentally handicapped.” When the call taker asked if he had been diagnosed with anything, he said he had “a clear mind and a full heart.”

Dallas police said they suspect that LeGuin put devices, including propane tanks and jars filled with liquid, outside a home. Several had exploded. He told a 911 call taker that he shot one of them.

LeGuin later surrendered to SWAT officers. He declined to talk to police after he was taken into custody, Cotner said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will assist in the investigation, Cotner said.

Initial reports had indicated that LeGuin had told police he was part of the “sovereign citizen” movement, which believes the federal, state and local governments operate illegally.

Wilkerson also said the family member got a call from a friend in Kentucky who had some concerning audio tapes along the same lines.

“There were no threats on the tape, but there was apparently some statements that were made that were anti-government where this individual talked about starting his own country and doing some things of that nature,” Wilkerson said.

Wilkerson said Corinth investigators haven’t heard the tapes firsthand.

Police say LeGuin will be charged with seven counts of aggravated assault against a public servant. Leguin has owned his current home in Corinth since 1998, records show.

The incident happened in Collin County, so the DA’s office there will handle the prosecution. For now, LeGuin is being held in Dallas County jail in lieu of $350,000 bail.

Dallas police posted audio of LeGuin’s 911 call here.
