Ive been in the US since June 2006, first on a K-1 visa, as of Dec 15th i became a Permenant Resident.

I am so confused about how my husband and i file taxes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated or any recommended books you have used before.

I just have no idea whatmy status is woth regards to tax. I have not worked since ive been in the us, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Any help would be great from someone who has been or is in the same situation.

Beth xx

You select the status that provides the least amount of tax liability. Most likely married filing joint. Your work status makes no difference.

IRS website has lots of info on this...

YMMV

It isnt easy to plough through the forms but it is far from impossible I did our taxes in my first year here.

Most likely it will be most beneficial for you to file married filing jointly as this will put all your allowances into the equation and up the rebate hopefully :D

There are two bits that get a tad complicated (both related) you have to declare all your income in the UK before you left (from Jan 1st to leave date thats the complicated bit as it doesn't tie in to the UK tax year) and then calculate it in dollars (I just took each pay cheque I had and did the calc using an online tool) don't worry this income doesn't count it basically goes on a form in one line and is removed in another (you are allowed around 80K foreign earnings pro rata)

There is also a calculation and form you need to complete to declare yourself a resident for tax purposes (you def qualify as I didnt get here till the Sept and I did)

All this is done from memory if you want me to pull the exact form number etc happy to just PM me. Dont panic the IRS website is very good and it isnt half as complicated as it sounds.
