Guests dress code and time of arrival for Oath ceremony

Hi everyone,

My oath ceremony is coming soon and I have a question about the dress code for the GUESTS. I know they says no jeans, shorts or flip flops for the citizen to be but I can't find anything about the guests dress code. I live in San Diego, CA so the usual casual wear often includes shorts and flip flops; is this acceptable for the guests to wear these at the ceremony?

My second question is related to the time at which the guests should be there. I read somewhere that the actual ceremony usually starts at 10:00am but they ask me to be there at 08:00am. Can my guest arrive at 10:00am? Do they let people in even if the ceremony has already started?

Business casual attire is great.

During my oath ceremony I saw lots of people in business suit. No rip jeans, faded jeans or tees just not to dishonor the occasion. Your guest can be there around 9 am..usually,some representatives of Democratic and Republican parties will be there to register participants to vote...and they have goodies.. I took goodies from both parties..lol.. let your guest get there around (parking and traffic)...congrats!

Geesh, have they no respect for you? They would show up to such an important occasion in shorts and flip flops? Wow.

Perhaps the more important questions are:

a) why would you want guests who wear flip flops to a ceremony of such solemness regardless of the weather?

b) if they can't be on time, why do they need to come at all? It's a Naturalisation Oath Ceremony, not the dress rehearsal for the county play

My husband's naturalization ceremony was in San Diego and he wore a nice dress shirt, pants and a tie. I was his "guest" and wore a pair of Capri pants and a blouse. Nobody wore shorts or flip flops. In fact, some men had suits on. The guests were all dressed nicely; nobody looked like they were going to a fancy party, but everyone took the occasion seriously enough to look nice.

We had to be there at 7:45 and we got there at 7:15. There was a line already and we began going in around 8:15. Getting there early/on time means you get good parking and a good seat for the guests. It is true that the ceremony begins around 9:30, but I just got myself a good seat, and waited. Everyone did the same thing.

The ceremony was over by 11:00.

It is a special day and somewhat emotional (I think I cried more than my husband ), and will hopefully become a wonderful experience.

Your guests can wear whatever they want, they're not going through the oath ceremony. Common sense would say business casual is fine. No one is taking a picture of your guests

My husband wore nice jeans and a polo to our daughter's oath last week and he was better dressed than most.
