Can you have Dual Citizenship? If you come from another country and apply for US Citizenship, do they require you revoke your current countries citizenship?

I can't imagine this is true, but I needed to ask...

It really depends on the country you are coming from. Some of the former Soviet states will also require that you relinquish your citizenship once you become a US citizen. The trouble you would have would be when traveling trying to return to your homeland or depending on the country, abroad.

The US doesn't force you to revoke your former citizenship. The US does however, require that you take an oath of allegence to the US.

Patience is required for this process.

Like everyone said above, it depends on the country the foreigner is from. I was born in Colombia but grew up in the States, so I have both citizenships. Every time I go to Colombia I have to use my Colombian passport and on my return, I have to use my American one.

Just read the ariticle. I wonder how many Canadians like myself carry both passports when travelling back to Canada? I would think it shouldn't matter that much comming across there with a US passport and just saying American would it? I really don't want to have to carry both of them, and hell I want to be proud of being an American and show my US passport next time I cross the border to visit...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I can't imagine this is true, but I needed to ask...

Did you read the FAQ or the pinned post at the top of this forum?

Please read some of the threads in this forum; your question is addressed often.

Yes, even this last one.. stuff in there that not even your USC knows.....

For you folks who carry two passports, I take it the US doesn`t care about that? Have you ever been inspected upon entry and the inspecting officer saw your other passport? Just wondering because the topic came up on another forum that I frequent and nobody there had experience in the matter.

Hmmm....I remembered the District Judge in Boston, Ma stated that the US government don't recognize dual citizenship. Wherever you have to declare your citizenship, you must say that you are a US citizen. Where did the website come from?

Yes, a few foreign countries will allow you to have dual citizenship but that's at those countries discretion. However, the US don't recognize dual citizenship. On any applications that you fill in that ask you for your country of citizenship, you must declare US citizen. This is coming from a Federal Judicial Judge during an oath ceremony.

Of course my wife will take the oath of allegence to the US, but being from China she cannot have dual citizenship. Now the question is, what won't she be entitled to if she doesn't declare US citizenship? If she works is she still entitled to social security when she retires? Would she be able to vote? So many questions.

Thanks,

Keith & Xiang
