There's truth to that, I admit.

But what if I just left my pants at home, and wore brightly colored boxer shorts around town? Would you still think it was my personal fashion choice? What about if I went to the swimming pool, shucked my clothes, and swam nekkid? (Germans are fond of this) Don't see many mechanics working on cars in suits here in America, do ya? (They do in Korea!) Sure, there are regional quirks that will not fit in America, but where do you draw the line? Not sure where/when you grew up, but in my time and area, it was taboo to go around showing your underwear, be it boxers or skivvies, after you were much older than 5.

But that's a topic for another thread, I reckon. On the OT, it is a sad day when someone dies for no reason, especially a kid who had his life ahead of him.

Reminds me of one of the saddest flights I ever made... local EMS would not fly due to bad weather, so my crew and I got up, strapped in, and went and picked up a young girl from a party in middle GA. Her class had just graduated, she at the top. Some dingbat who was supposed to have graduated 2 or 3 years prior, and who had just gotten out of prison (and had no business being at the post-graduation bonfire), pulled a gun on someone during an argument, and it "went off"... bullet hit her in the lower spine. We got her to the hospital in Savannah in time, but the prognosis I got from the doc (I went back a couple of days later to see how she was doing) was a lifetime of lower extremity paralysis. Beautiful young lady, her whole life ahead of her, and while she did not die, her life was changed forever by an imbecile who shouldn't have even been there.

And just for you, Marvin, the shooter was white, she was black. But as her momma hugged my neck and thanked me for being willing to fly her daughter to the hospital in weather no one else would fly in, with tears streaming down both our faces, no one mentioned anything about race. It was just the tragedy that mattered...

I commend you for what you did:

First, once again, I don't like the trend myself. But it's just that. I don't like seeing it myself because folks love to paint all of us in the same light. Saggy pants=no future for black teens. Back in the 90's you didn't sag, you pulled up your boxers to show what you had on. I know this because my friends were doing it, all the rage. And they were all in high school, not gang members, just kids having fun.

As for the second thing, this should be the normal reaction to any tragedy, but look at the comments on this young man who lost his life. Every single time a black teen is killed, we have to defend them. We have to prove they didn't deserve to die, we have to defend their choice of clothing, we have to talk about him going to college and being a great young man so people outside of our color will see him as a human being rather than some animal. Look at twitter and see what's hot right now, #Iftheygunnedmedown and #WhatIteachmyblackson.

yes marvin, listen carefully to what the good man is trying to say. he's trying to help you. black people seem to be unaware that they should pull their pants up and he's made it his life calling to let them know that their baggy pants are disrepectful to the rest of us.

i personally am more offended by camel toe and wedgies that don't quit but i've been corrupted by a youth filled with clothing worn backwards and hammer pants.

and as a big person, I can say that I am offended by fat people who wear spandex and such #######. I dress to accentuate my massive upper body and to smooththe bulges of my middle and lower body.

Why you see some 250 lb woman with an butt the size of battleship, in short spandex is beyond me.

So, you're telling me that you see Justin Beiber as a thug? Do you think he has the same problems as a black teen who dresses in the exact same manner?

I don't paint all white people as the same brush. I point out the stark differences in how situations are handled when it comes to race. Same as Janelle. When others here make racial comments and broad generalizations they're rarely called out. When myself and Janelle call it out, we're told that we race bait.

Nope, I don't see Justin Beiber. Unless it's on here in a thread about his crimes. And to be clear, I never used the word "thug" and "saggin" in the same sentence.

Some people are racist, always have been, always will be. You should strive to be different from them, and by different, I don't mean opposite in the color they judge. I mean in donig anything you can to eliminate racism. There will always be differences in races, colors, backgrounds... whatever you choose to delineate people. But those differences shouldn't mean unfair treatment. Sure, there was much inequality in the past, but I'd say it has gotten better as time has gone on, at least here in the US. Do we still have room to improve? Of course, a lot. But we all should strive to move on. Yeah, I know, it's easier for a white person than a black person in some ways, but in other ways, that is also used as an excuse. There are enough successful blacks in this world to prove that rising above the stigma of being black and poor is very possible.

does anyone know why these mobs wreck & loot businesses after something like this happens?

Because ignorance and anger go hand in hand. Those idiots used this kid's death as an excuse to rob and break shyt. And like I said, because of that, folks will now think this kid did something to deserve his death.

where do i draw the line? when someone tells me how to dress.

and why does this shooting remind you of that flight, if race means nothing?

Can you please point me to where I said blacks "should pull their pants up"? I believe I said ANYONE sagging, regardless of color. Please don't attempt to out me as a racist or someone who is against any particular culture/color in general, you will fail miserably.

It is indeed possible for a person to get out of poverty and rise above social stigma.

But there are some grim, meathook realities to consider that go beyond mere platitudes. For example:

As of 2010, black men in America earned 74.5 percent of a typical white man’s wage; black women earned 69.6 percent. A new paper from Harvard’s Roland Fryer (certified genius), Princeton’s Devah Pager and Jorg L. Spenkuch of the University of Chicago examines some of the factors driving the black-white wage gap.

Using data from unemployed workers in New Jersey who sought employment for up to 12 weeks, the authors show that racial discrimination accounts for one-third of the wage difference. They also estimate that blacks have a 7 percent lower reservation wage than their white counterparts at a comparable job that demands a comparable skill level. Fryer and his colleagues control for skill level by measuring the job applicants’ wage at their previous job against the wage they were seeking.

Why do you think I carry myself in the manner I do? I can't use slang, even when I'm off work because all it takes is one instance, next thing you know I'm Marvin the thug. I can't dress too casually or folks will think I'm lazy. I can't get too ignorant on this site, lest I be labeled an angry black man. You should hear the rules law abiding black people have to live by. We have to do everything better than you just to be considered almost just as good. I've seen white people get loud and rude, folks try real hard to calm them down. Black people? The cops get called at the slightest raise in voice.

And it's hard to move forward when being black can still get you killed by the police, another black person, or some guy who felt threatened, but confronted you first with a gun when you're unarmed.

It shouldn't. That's not the black community. That's a few ignorant people.

No need to commmend me, I was just doing my job, but thanks. I wasn't trying to toot my own horn, just portraying a similar (if not as lethal) tragedy.

No, you don't have to defend them. Why would you even waste your time? Do you think ANYTHING you would ever say to idiots who post some of those trashy comments would make a difference? No. Never. Why? Because they are bigoted and hate. Don't ask me why, cuz I don't get it. There are places where people still THINK they hate blacks because their ancestors hated blacks. Or owned them, whatever. I realize I can never change those people, so I just ignore them. They will die one day, and their insignificance with them.

I did not read the comments on the original post, cuz I saw what you and Janelle said they were saying. Not worth my time. I'd rather palaver with you and her and maybe even val (though she is trying real hard to hurt my feelings today). When you see ####### like that, you should just close the tab. You got the story line, disregard the uneducated stupidity.
