K-1 Visa questions regarding age.

Hello all,

So my fiance and I are planning on going through the K-1 Visa route, we just have a few questions regarding our age. My Fiance is 23 and I'm 18, I'm just curious as to if we'll have to prepare a little bit more for our interview because of our age difference and I read somewhere that they generally look down on the man being younger than the woman. The question is, will we run into any major problems preventing us from getting the K-1?

We have met, I stayed with here from May 7th 2014 to July 10th 2014, we have various things proving we're a real couple (Pictures, boarding passes, hotel receipts even receipts for the Grand Canyon, Bearazona, Seaworld San Diego, Six Flags Magic Mountain, San Diego Zoo, we even have proof that we went to Silverton and Durango in Colorado as well as skype calls lasting anywhere from 5 hours - 15 hours long.)

We just want to be as prepared as possible before we start and we don't want to be rejected the privilege to live with one another because of silly little things such as my age.

We're aware of the tough road ahead and we're both very willing to go through all the bull dust just to be together.

Thank you for your time and consideration, it's much appreciated!

I don't think your age difference is the issue it's how young you are. At 18 you are just out of highschool. Why not wait a few years?

Well, why wait?

At the age of 18 I am a consenting adult, with emphasis on 'Adult'.

Yes, I am young, but no I'm not immature, I know what I need and what I need is her.

An age is just a number after all, that number shows nothing about the person, or anything about his or her maturity.

If I truly believe (Which I do) that I will spend the rest of my life with my Fiance, why should I wait?

I get I'll be looked down on and judged but at the end of the day, it is my life and only I can know what is best for me and I believe Sara (My Fiance) is best for me.

I get you probably weren't attacking me, but I think it's rude to question ones decision when you know nothing about that person.

Don't take what I'm saying the wrong why, although I understand it's hard to take it any other way.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

We read somewhere that an attorney could wave most of the income requirements, in fact most of the requirements in general, besides the meeting and proving you're a real couple.

Is this not true? Because we were thinking about hiring an attorney to help my Fiance through it, would that be a good idea or not really?

Incorrect. She must be able to support you. Can she? Does she have a degree? What are you going to do once you get here? At your age, you're not going to be able to get a skilled job in the United States. Is your fiancé able to pay for your education? How are you going to contribute to the household? The cost of living is very different here than in Australia, and that includes a minimum wage that's half of what you're accustomed to.

You must be able to meet all of the requirements, including proving you're a couple, and income. And what other requirements are you worried about not meeting?

Well, why wait?

At the age of 18 I am a consenting adult, with emphasis on 'Adult'.

Dude, the Consulate very well could ask you about the age difference. Prepare, and don't be rude like that. How do I know? Because my husband is 9 years younger than me. Even though he has a PhD, is well-considered an adult by both US and Aussie standards, it's not considered a cultural norm, and thus is cause for concern. You can read about the questions he was asked in his review of the Consulate; they can be nosy/intimidating, and look to push buttons or sore spots. If you can't handle a couple of people pointing out some very simple things that you guys need to think about now, how are you going to handle the Consulate doing it in a much less nice fashion?

Your age isn't a silly thing that will reject you from being able to live together. But you're not asking to live together, you're declaring your intent to marry, and the lack of financial ability to support another person will be a huge issues.

Hi,

Wasn't attacking you as you came on VJ asking a question. It's hard enough to support one person when you are 18. This is not an cheap process. But, if you can afford it or you have someone who can help you then I hope everything works out for you.

At first I thought the female (23 years old) was the US citizen, but now it seems the male (18 years old) is the US citizen?

That changes the financial picture bit more.

Yes, you are fully entitled to get married, so I won't touch that subject.

So let's look at the financial responsibilities that goes with it.

1. Fiancee visa processing, medical exam and shots, airline ticket for her to get to US,

and eventual green card related processing can add up to be about $3000 to $4000.

2. Engagement/wedding ring ... you name the price for this.

3. Wedding reception ... you name the price for this.

My daughter's wedding cost was $40,000, but you can be married at county

court for couple of hundred dollars.

4. Establishing a place to live and eat ... $1000 to $2000 per month

5. Buying furniture for your living place ... more than $1000

6. A car for you and for her, so that both of you can work ...

7. Since without a college degree, it's difficult to get a nice paying job,

would you or her go to school?

8. Unplanned but necessary expenses like car repairs, medical bills, etc.

9. And young people have to have smartphones with data plan ... and you know the cost for this

Do the complete math up front and you and your fiancee can figure out what is do-able or not.

Good luck...

Incorrect, and not sure why it would make a difference.

"Incorrect" in who's judgement?

You are the ultimate judge on "correctness" and "incorrectness" for everyone?

It may not make a difference, but it can...depending on their situation.

If a 23 year old is the USC, then that person could be a college graduate with sufficient income to live on,

but a 18 year old is USC, who has barely graduated from high school, then will have limited good income job situations.

So back to my comment on "it could change the financial picture a bit"...

Based on his writing, its unclear as to who's the USC...

Incorrect, in the sense that the 23 yo is the American and the 18 yo is the Australian.

That's what I thought initially too, but it seems inconclusive.

Unless I missed it, I don't see where that is pointed out clearly.

It was my understanding that the poster is an 18 year old male named Benjamin. He was concerned about his foreign fiancee being the female and older than he is. That is how it was worded in his initial post. I believe he used fiance(which is a male) instead of correctly using fiancee(which is a female) when making his post.

In his comment to the person asking why he does not wait, he confirms he is the 18 year old male who wants to be with her(the foreign fiancee), where he calls her Sara and incorrectly uses fiance again when referring to her.

Why not Fan_Dancer?...I sure would marry a 81 year old man as long as we are happy, respect and love each other...

Really what does age got to do with it?

If you live long enough you too shall get old....

My life and my relationship is not deemed by a age difference.
