Since the PHD students recieve the funds for both study and living cost i do not think it will be a problem for me to live alone at USA . but i really want to happen the VISA gaining process secretly.

But is this even posible my friends? I love to study and i don't wanna marry . What are my other option. thanks a lot for yours help

Your edcaution is first, you shouldnt have to marry someone because thats what others think are best for you. Think of it like this, your trying to make a future for yourself the best way you know how.....or you let you family build your future where you just might be dettered from your dreams because your married and your future might take another route.... If they dont care that you dont wanna get married, whats gonna happen when a baby is requested by you? Say no? Look if you are of age, confident of your plans. Willing to work and go to school and reside in the U.S. then...... do it...GOODLUCK

I do not know how it works where you are, but would your Parents be involved in getting financing?

I don't know how my spouse did it but he got his fiancé visa without his family knowing. You can set up an address with a friend for all your documents to go to. You do need to show you have sufficient funds for school to obtain a student visa. And of course the first step is to find a school that will accept you.

Good luck with this. I know second hand how difficult some families of your tradition can be in regards to you need to marry now and finding you a husband. Be polite but firm in your refusals.

Edited for wrong sex: Thanks Boiler, I fixed it.

I am sure Bahrain culture is different, but from US culture standpoint,

this is not silly at all, instead, I think it's very commendable for an young adult.

Your Ph.D. program will be self-funded, so you are not financially burdening your parents,

and you are pursuing to become one of the elite (from education standpoint) members of the any society,

so if it can be pulled off, I think it would be great.

In terms of the "secret processing"...I think you need to figure that out since you know

your situation the best. Is their a household member that you can convince and can

support you quietly on this?

Best of luck...

I don't know much about the culture of Bahrain so I want to ask.....

Who has physical control of your passport? Also do you have to get permission from your father or brother to leave Bahrain?

What will be the consequences if you do manage to get a visa in secret when you return to your home country?

I am not trying to talk you out of it .....I'm just worried about what your consequences will be in the end.

Before thinking about the visa, at least some of the correspondance with the college/s you are applying would have to get to you somehow. It might be possible to use a friend address or some postal box, but then when the paperwork for the visa is issued by the college, it might have that address (not your home), which might cause some problems at the time of the visa (I don't know for sure of this, can others here comment?).

You might also want to think about what would happen once you have a visa; at some point and before traveling you would have to tell your family (unless you just take off and inform them once you arrive to the US), and they might confine you. Not to stereotype but from what I know from friends in Arab countries, it wouldn't be unheard of.

I strongly believe you have the right to decide about your life, but need to plan carefully your journey so the end result is your PhD and a family (when you decide is time).

You are correct in that it is very common that PhD students are fully funded by colleges. For what is worth, there is no requirement for a visa (that I know of) that you disclose to your family of your intentions (as long as you are an adult).

Hopefully some of the members here wit direct experience in Bahrain could come in and comment.

You bring up a very valid point. I used to work at my school's international office. We were not able to send documents to PO Boxes, it had to be a street/home address. Sometimes the addresses were that of a company. The reason for that was because the school used couriers, documents were not sent by regular mail. Obviously I cannot speak for all international offices. I'm not sure though if the address will matter for the visa interview, we just used the addresses that students provided.

Something else to consider is that in the case that the visa is approved, your passport might be sent to you via courier a few days after the interview. You need to provide a street/home address for that too.

It is such a sad situation that your family expects you to get married, you are so young! I applaud you for wanting to continue your education. Good luck.

IME, schools don't arrange the VISA for you, you have to arrange it yourself. (My husband was recently extended an offer for continued studies; it came during our K-1 process, and the school made it clear that it was up to him to procure the necessary VISA for being allowed to study/work in the USA.)

So, you are looking at:

1) having to apply to academic programs in the USA (do you have the money to cover application fees without anyone noticing? where will they send letters?);

2) being accepted to a program that fully funds your PhD (this depends on what you're studying-not all programs are fully, or even partially, funded; science-based PhDs seem to prefer you first have an MS, as well);

3) arranging a corresponding student VISA without your family knowing.

It sounds like a lot of work, and like you are going to need assistance from at least one actual address on the ground in Bahrain. Good luck.

No, of course they don't have anything to do with the visa process, but OP is concerned about receiving mail at her home address and her family then finding out her plans of studying in the US. The point is that if she receives her admission letter and I-20 from the school at her home address, of course her family will know what is happening.

OP test one trustworthy friend (not living with their parents) what

would they think about that idea. then check out the schools in USA,

ask the friend to use their address to recieve mails, secure your PP

from family & go about your everyday business normally while

nicely saying U want to wait a few more yrs for marriage. Do U need an

exit visa from your country, do you have finances for travel, will your

parents dis-own U?, All this U should think about B4 moving forward

but remember your, education & happiness should be above cultural

beliefs of the old time ppl
