Marriage overseas is quite complicated in some cases. I married my wife (Filipina) in Bahrain and it took 4 months just to get all the paperwork together. After the marriage we had to run it by her embassy for approval, then the Department of Foreign Affairs in Bahrain for Approval, then finally the U. S. Embassy for approval. Once all that was reached we could finally change her name legally to my last name with the Philippines Embassy. Then we had to give the signed copy to the GOSI showing the change, department of foreign affairs again, and finally we could apply for her passport to the Philippines to be changed. Upon receiving that we could finally change her Residence Permit in Bahrain. Once all that was done we could finally do her paperwork to do the I-130. If we missed any of those steps it would delay different paperwork later with the NVC. Basically, make sure you know what you are getting into. If you work on a Military base, pursue getting with the local immigration liaison at both the base and embassy for assurances. As well, if you are military, ensure you update your orders to reflect her being your dependent (so they drop all the fees at NVC and the embassy). Don't get discouraged either way. The embassy staff are just people like us in the end. Good luck and God bless you on your journey.

If you marry in an overseas country, it will cost you about 2 years in time between the K-1 and waiting for the children to be born, getting married, and getting an I-130 approved..,.,.,about 12-16 months if you are lucky.

The other legal paperwork is way ovr my head,.,.,.,.,(Inappropriate comment removed - VJ Moderation).,.,.,get you NOA 2.,.,.,.bring your wif ena dchildren to the USA..,.,.,and things will be so much easier!

Abandon the K-1 will cost you 2 years!.,.,.,.,.as least!

June 17, 2010: Arrived for second in-person meeting and start of travel together to other areas of China!

April 22, 2011: Mailed I-130 to Chicago
April 28, 2011: Received NOA1 via text/email, file routed to CSC (priority date April 25th)
April 29, 2011: Updated
May 3, 2011: Received NOA1 hardcopy in mail
July 26, 2011: Received NOA2 via text/email!!!
July 30, 2011: Received NOA2 hardcopy in mail
August 8, 2011: NVC received file
September 1, 2011: NVC case number assigned
September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)
October 6, 2011: Case complete at NVC
November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!
December 7, 2011: POE - Sea-Tac Airport

September 17, 2013: Mailed I-751 to CSC

September 23, 2013: Received NOA1 in mail (receipt date September 19th)

October 16, 2013: Biometrics Appointment

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal
