A man's attempt to take a dramatic selfie reportedly turned tragic earlier this month when the loaded gun with which he was posing went off and killed him.

According to Mexican newspaper Excelsior, Oscar Otero Aguilar, a 21-year-old man from Mexico City, had been drinking with friends before the incident occurred. The friends reportedly said Aguilar had grabbed a gun with the intention of posing with it for a selfie, which he intended to post on Facebook.

Police said Aguilar had "borrowed the gun and was waving it around" as he attempted to take a photo, WFTS-TV reports.

The gun, however, went off, and Aguilar was shot in the head. He died soon afterward.

Damn shame. Alcohol and firearms don't mix.

I don't understand how a gun "goes off" You always hear stories like this about people cleaning a gun or something and it "goes off" What does that even mean? Like it fired somehow without the hammer dropping? Is that even possible? I mean outside of heating the bullet to a high temperature or something.

I'd assume folks would pull the trigger accidentally. The guy grabbed the gun and started waving it around, while intoxicated. There wasn't a chance to clear the weapon beforehand.

It's cool to set the trigger so light that a injured centipede could make it go off. Gotta be ready for when someone invades your home!

There are older firearms out there that can fire without the trigger pull because they lack hammer block safeties - IE the hammer is resting against the firing pin and the hammer gets bumped.

19th century revolvers for instance are loaded with 5 rounds and the hammer goes down on an empty.

Glad you provided the insight. The article didn't specify what type of handgun was used. That might be the case, or he just had his finger resting on the trigger and pulled on accident.

Maybe he got the phone and the gun confused. Pulled the trigger instead of pressing the snap photo button.
