HOLMES BEACH (FOX 13) -

It was broad daylight, just around 2:30 in the afternoon. NJ Logan was upstairs at her Holmes Beach home off 6th Avenue.

She was resting after hip replacement surgery when she heard a noise downstairs.

"I kept hearing a commotion, like there were people walking around down there," she said.

She was alone. Her husband was out playing Bridge.

"It is a little frightening. You know that you don't have the security that you thought you had," she says.

But her fear didn’t stop her.

"Once I realized it wasn't my husband, you have no idea how fast you can go," she said.

In a police report, officers said the suspect used a large rock to smash the bottom glass out of the door. They then cut out the screen.

On the other side of the door, NJ was awake and ready.

"I don't know what was going on in my mind. Honestly all I wanted was my gun," she said.

She grabbed it and went downstairs.

"I was probably running down the stairs with my new hip so to speak," said NJ.

She yelled out warnings to whoever was downstairs.

"I didn't want to shoot. I really didn't want to have to shoot anybody," she said.

She then called for help.

"When I called 911 she kept saying put the gun down. Put the gun down and I said I'll put the gun down when I see the police," NJ said.

Holmes Beach Police Chief William Tokajer said there have been a few incidents in NJ's neighborhood -- one she may have stopped.

"I think it's a wake up call to any would-be burglar," Chief Tokajer said.

While her mind isn't completely at ease, she sleeps better knowing her protection is just a drawer away.

"I worry very much about somebody breaking in again."

But she has no plans to get rid of her weapon.

"I believe in guns inside your house, because I don't think anybody has the right to break into your private domain. I'll definitely have the gun up there that is for sure," she said.

The Holmes Beach Police Department is still looking for the suspects.

And just a few counties to the north the worshipped "gun in the house" cost this woman and her unborn child their lives...

Pregnant woman dies after accidentally being shot in head

BROOKSVILLE — Katherine Lynn Bryan grew up in New Port Richey, the youngest in a tight-knit group of four siblings. She recently got married and became Katherine Hoover. At the age of 25, she was five months pregnant. The new baby was going to be her second son.

Instead, a tragic gun accident at a friend's house left the young mother and her unborn child dead Sunday.

"What has happened is truly a tragic shock," said a distraught Gary Bryan, one of her brothers. "My sister was a wonderful and special woman. She was a wonderful wife and mother. She had just gotten married and was getting herself established."

A stay-at-home mother who had recently moved from New Port Richey to Inverness, Katherine Hoover died in a hospital emergency room early Sunday.

She was shot in the head Saturday evening while being shown a gun at a friend's house in Brooksville, authorities said.

She and her husband, Carson Hoover, had gone to visit friends at 20079 Suncrest Drive in northwest Brooksville, just outside the city limits.

Sometime around 6:45 p.m. inside the house, William DeHayes was showing the Hoovers some of his guns, including a .22-caliber revolver. The gun accidentally fired and shot Katherine Hoover in the head, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Hoover was rushed to Bayfront Health Brooksville and then airlifted to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.

Her unborn child could not be saved. Shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, physicians removed the 5-month-old fetus from his dying mother in a last-ditch attempt to save him. But he was pronounced dead just after 8:30 p.m.

Hoover succumbed to her injuries just after 3 a.m. Sunday. She is survived by her other son, 6-year-old Nicholas, her family said.

The investigation into the shooting continues. Authorities say it appears to be an accident and are releasing no more information at this time.

The gun owner, DeHayes, is 35 years old and has no criminal history, records show.

Hoover's sudden loss left her family and friends reeling.

"She was truly a special person, inside and out," said her only sister, Kayleigh Bryan. "We were blessed to have the time that we had with her. She's going to be missed very much."

Hoover attended Gulf High School in Port Richey. She got married to Carson Hoover, a heavy-equipment driver, last December.

So the anti gun VJ'ers agree with the dispatcher? An intruder is in your home and you'd put the gun down? You'd take your chances until the police arrived? Yea, right.

If someone breaks into my home, and I'm armed, I'd do the same thing the lady did, let them know I'm armed and give them a chance to get out of my house. Killing a human being isn't on my to do list, unless I have no choice.

But some think the woman should have listened the police and put the gun down and remained defenseless until the police arrived. Would MBD have listened if the dispatcher said put down your baseball bat, or does it only apply to guns?

I probably wouldn't put my gun down in that situation.

Non one in their right mind would put it down until the cops got there. And then they'd do it for their own safety as the cops would probably shoot the home owner when they saw the gun.

Its a possibility for sure though. When you talk about any issue like this, you know nothing will cover all bases. The goal should be to decrease the amount of illegal guns in this country as they are a major problem. I don't think anyone disagrees with that. But I think there's a common misconception that illegal guns are smuggled in from mexico or something? Illegal guns are guns that were more than likely purchased legally by legal gun owners.
