Husband wants a translator for Cairo interview

My husband speaks English fairly well. I am on the fence of whether or not he could get through the interview no problem. I think his anxiety might get the best of him if he has to do it in full English. He does great with me, but I know other people will make him nervous. Is it a terrible plan for him to request a translator? I see the emabssy making that out to mean we can't communicate and therefore can't have a good marriage.

We are both really stressed about this decision and would appreciate some suggestions.

I may not be very well informed because I've only applied for non-immigrant visas at the Cairo embassy, but I remember that whenever I was there, I was asked if I wanted to be interviewed in English or Arabic. So I know that they have bilingual consular officers, but I don't know if an immigrant visa interview has to be conducted in English. Perhaps someone else can add their thoughts.

I can speak English pretty good and the CO still asked me which one I would prefer to answer his questions whether in Bahasa or English which I had replied back that I prefer in English. Nervous sometimes makes you forget what you wanted to speak of. If he needs one I think it should be okay to ask.

My wife also speaks English fairly well but for her interview we are going to ask it be in Vietnamese. Working with her on the interview questions I found that although she knew the answer to the question she would give me the wrong answer because she misunderstood one word in the question. For us it is more important to give the right answer than impressing them with her ability to speak English. She and I communicate easily with each other and one of the reasons is I am from Kentucky where speaking slow is common. Good Luck...

I think I would rather him be comfortable and answer the questions correctly than try to impress them with his English. I think it would go way smoother with a translator or he might even get a bilingual CO. Most of the employees spoke Arabic when we went to the embassy to get approval for our marriage.

That's right .The second question that they might ask him if he would say i want my interview in Arabic is so how do you guys communicate ?! If he does great with you as you said he will do great with them as well .

Good luck and my best wishes for you .

So maybe have a translator as a backup?

Really his English is not fantastic and he has been working on it a lot. We still sometimes use a translator app as a backup.

My husband (then-fiance) did not have to ask for an interpreter during his interview at the Cairo embassy. As soon as he walked up to the CO, he said good morning in Arabic with a great smile and the CO proceeded to interview him in Arabic without asking him what language he wants the interview to be in or if he wants an interpreter. Maybe your husband can do the same?

Hope that helps and good luck on his interview!

Well to be honest i don't recommended it.But every case is different though. You never know if the CO would give him problems because he doesn't speak good English or not .The CO at the us embassy trying their best to find anything to deny the visa .I'm sorry i'm not trying to scare you .What happened with me was i started to speak English to the CO from the first second when she was taking my fingerprints .So she never asked me if i want my interview in English or Arabic.

I think it's not a good point for your case. Tell your husband to not be stressed and speak English at interview as he communicate with you, he mostly would get a bilingual CO, and if he didn't understand a question, CO will repeat it in Arabic. That's what happened with me.
