All kidding aside - The two Americans that have ebola have been given some experimental drug that so far looks to possibly be a cure to the disease.. None of this drug has been sent to Africa and the death toll there is approaching 1000. There is some outrage that will be starting soon...

Liberian Assistant Health Minister Dr. Todd Nyenswah, told The Journal that families of other Ebola victims have deluged officials with requests for the drug.

"This is something that has made our job most difficult," Dr. Nyenswah said. "The population here is asking, 'You said there was no cure for Ebola, but the Americans are curing it?'"

There is no proven treatment or vaccine for Ebola, which so far has infected more than 1,700 people and killed more than 930 in West Africa in what has become the worst outbreak of this viral hemorrhagic fever.

"We don't even know if it works," stressed Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health, which helped fund research that led to the drug's development.

That's a double-edged sword. If the untested vaccine is not getting to those that it ight help in Africa, then it's just that nobody cares about people in Africa. If the untested vaccine is used there, then the story line will be that Africans are used as guinea pigs for an experiemental drug. That headline would be much worse if there are bad effects coming from the use of the vaccine. This is a classic lose-lose situation.

yeah good points... Though in this case it is a treatment not a vaccine so it is a bit different. If I had a disease that was 90% fatal I'd like to have the option to take a possible cure.

Reading the article it does not really matter - they only had the drugs ready for human experiments set to occur next year and are not capable of producing it in bulk quantities.

The agencies in play here are really weird - funded by the military, the pharmaceutical company is actually RJ Reynolds because it uses tobacco leafs yet the actual tobacco piece of the puzzle was done in Germany because they had perfected the technology - after all that the antibodies created were only partially successful.. Turns out the Canadians were doing the same thing independently and were also partially successful so they combined their good parts with the Reynolds good parts and tada! - a new serum is born. Crazy.
