what is the standard islamic custom regarding this?

women do not typically take the man's last name, additionally there are regions in which it is common to be without a last name, the kids just take the father's first name, and so on, while the wife keeps her name (1st name and HER father's first name). even if the family does have a family surname, the woman does not traditionally take their name.

i do not know the official reasoning behind this (if there is one), but you inherit your name from your father.

I don't know about other countries but in Jordan, instead of changing your last name, you register with the goverment for a family book. This book is retained by the man of the house and it lists the name of his wife and children.

I dropped my maiden last name and took his second middle name hyphenated with his last name and made it my new last name. Alot of people thought I should have keep my maiden last name and just added his last name, but to me our new union deserves a new name(now this is my own personal opinion so don't go freaking out okay I'm not downing anyone who decided to kept her maiden name. ) People still butcher my first name and Ive had it since birth go figure.

There is a family book in Morocco. It's what we pulled out to fill out the biography forms to make sure everything was correct information according to the records.

When I first told my husband about wanting to take his last name, he thought it was rather odd. I told him it was the way most ppl did it here in America. After explaining the meaning behind it, he really liked the idea and congratulated me every time I would get confirmation of the name change on any new document. He still gets a kick out of calling me by first and last name (just in fun).

Very few people ever get my first name right so it was no big deal to add a very odd last name to it. I do enjoy watching the receptionists come to the door and say..."cha..chon.....ehm.. alma...almmmm..." and then they look around the room like a deer in headlights... The look of relief when I stand up is so worth taking his name

i definitely plan on taking my fiance's last name. i didn't even know it wasn't tradition in morocco. i'm almost positive my fiance's mother has her husbands last name.

but since we'll be living in the us (for now anyway) i prefer his last name to mine, and i love the traditions behind it, i'll be taking on his name. we say my name out loud together with his last name all the time. i love the sound of it! :D (sorry daddy)

It will go to his wife and if she dies, it goes to the oldest son. Sorry it took me so long to answer, I didn't see your question until now.

I do plan on taking his last name but I won't until we are officially married in a church. I don't mind my last name because I changed it back to my maiden name after I got divorced. There is no wayyyyyyyyyyyy I would keep my ex's last name for a even a day. I was so happy the day my divorce got granted!

I think a lot about things after getting officially married. One of the things that has crossed my mind is about changing my name to my husbands. After we officially get married, my name would be Julie El Hannaouy. We are now pregnant so of course the baby would have his last name, but I do not think I will change my name to his last name. What are your thoughts about this?

I think you should whatever feels right. No where does it say you have to change your name.

For myself, even I am satisfied with my last name I want to change it after I get throu this USC N-400 filing. I donnot want to make my petition slow down anymore then it has it already has. But I am wondering thou, if I can change my name later or is there some type of time limit? I would think there is not but I am not sure.

Our children of course would have his name. Which is El-Ghoul ... Even thou it is prounced Roul by looking at it I know will laugh. I pray for my kids
