Is EAD necessary if fiancee is not expected to work in first year?

According to this VJ site's AOS processing time (http://www.visajourney.com/timeline/aosstats.php)

it looks like GC processing takes about 4 to 5 months.

We are planning for my fiancee to focus the first year on

1. learning to drive a car

2. improve English

3. and acquire some US certifications related to her profession

If this is the case, does it make any sense to spend $380 to obtain authorization to work?

Or am I missing other values in getting the EAD?

When you filing I-485 concurred along with I-131 (AP) and I-765 (EAD), the fees will waived, other words you only need to pay I-485 with the total amount $1.070. You don't know what will happened in the future so better to file both in case you needed these cards before her green card gets approval.

EAD is not $380, it is free. AOS can take up to a year. An EAD is needed in most states to get a driver's license, so if you want to learn to drive, an EAD is probably a good idea.

In many states an EAD is needed to get a driver's license or learner permit, so if your wife wants to learn how to drive, then she will need an EAD.

GC processing times can also be longer than just 4-5 months. Mine took 8 months, some other members on here waited 12+ months for their GC.

You have nothing to lose and don't pay anything for it, so go for it!

I'm just learning that EAD is actually another form of ID card.

I just looked up some pictures.

All along, I was thinking it would be just a piece of paper.

So I can see how DMV would like that.

ya - usually schools want to see a green card, but an EAD card can be utilized as well... it varies, really, but having the EAD card is useful.

try to budget local tuition vs out of state tuition vs international tuition amounts, you can see some difference in the amounts...

Someone that enters with a K-1 can get their SSN right after entry, as long as they have more than 2 weeks left before their I-94 expires. The EAD would only be needed if they did not get the SSN before their I-94 expired.
