Getting the run around

~3 weeks after POE, my husband's SSN hadn't arrived, so we went to an office in person. We were told there that his name is listed incorrectly in the DHS system as three first names, rather than one first name and two middle names. We were told to go to USCIS to have it fixed.

I booked an INFOPASS appointment as early as I could, but it was a week and a half from that point, so in the meantime I asked my husband to go to CBP Deferred Inspection to see if they could fix the problem. When the woman looked him up in the system, she told him not only was his name wrong, he was incorrectly listed as having a K1 visa (despite the CR1 visa physically in his passport). The woman said she fixed both issues and recommended waiting a few days before trying SSA again.

Our second attempt to get the SSN was yesterday, and we were told nothing was changed in the system. It's also impossible to have the card issued with his name entered incorrectly, because it exceeds the allowed character length in the SSA system. This morning we had our INFOPASS appointment, and USCIS said that the error was in the DOS system and couldn't be fixed by USCIS. The guy told us the error occurred at the embassy. I pressed him for more information as to where we're supposed to go to have the problem fixed, and he didn't respond. Instead he took a printout, left the room for a while, and came back saying the name was fixed. Uh... ok? Not sure we believe that. He said the visa type can only be fixed by CBP, so now we have to call them again apparently, and we're really not convinced any of this has been sorted out at all... what the heck can we do to stop getting shuffled around like this? We're absolutely fed up and sick of running around all over the city to fix an error that XYZ government agency made in the first place.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

CBP is the one that handles the fixes into the SAVE database system.

It's a batch system - updates take a week or more to be live.

You should stick with CBP human until they are certain the fix is live. Go in person to the CBP office, each time. Sure, it's a hassle, but it is what it is.

Then go to SSA office.

Sorry for yer pain, though.

Thanks Darnell. Guess we'll keep on them and hope for the best sooner rather than later. CBP allegedly made the corrections last Thursday so maybe we're just a little premature. Fortunately we have the business card for the woman who helped him... go go Gadget follow-up. Henceforth I will ignore all USCIS/SSA accusations pointing me to different agencies as the source of the problem :P

No I-94 as Darnell mentioned. My husband says his passport as the same as your example, two after the surname and one after the other names.

Ah, right. Was wondering (since they said he was recorded as a K1) if there was an online I-94 generated because of the mistake.

I hope you get it resolved. The SSA is the single most useless and incompetent government agency to work with. I fear you're going to have more hassle with them once CBP fixes it on their side.
