Hi,

I was granted FX-2 Visa for US on June 20 , 2014 , I entered USA on 2nd August 2014.... I was travelling with a Temporary I-551 Visa on my passport and Brown Packet to be given at Port of entry in USA

FX-2 Child (unmarried and under 21 years of age)

I entered USA via New York , JFK Airport .... Where I was taken to fingerprint and signature in Border Check Room (I am not sure of name ) and they opened my brown packet and took it away

I want to know how long after port of Entry will I receive my Green Card and SSN ? Do i have to apply for SSN separately or anything else ... (My interview in embassy said i have to apply for selective service as I am male and 22 Year Old but my mom who is also GC Holder doesn't want me to apply for it)

Should I book my Ticket now or only after i receive my Green Card cause My college resumes in September , 2014 and I plan to come back to USA in winter vacations .

Thanks,

Have a good day

The I-551 in your passport is your GC until the plastic one arrives--which will take about 1 month after paying the ELIS fee. Have you gone to ELIS and paid the processing fee for the GC? Until you do, the USCIS will not send you the plastic GC. The SSC should arrive within a month. If not, you will need to go to your local SSA office and request it. Sometimes checking the box on the DS-230 form works and sometimes it does not.

About applying for selective service: As a male under the age of 25 you are REQUIRED to register. If you do not register it will cause you all kinds of problems should you ever decide to become a US citizen. I registered the day I turned 18 at my local post office. Nothing hard about it and nothing happens until the US government decided to re-institute the draft--last draft was during the Vietnam War almost 50 years ago.

Good luck,

Dave

Registering for the selective service is not optional. Your mother does not make the laws in the USA, so it doesn't really matter if she doesn't want you to, you're required to register unless you want to start off life in the USA by breaking the law.

I'm a bit confused by the comment you plan to return to the USA on winter vacations. Are you not planning on residing in the USA? Too much time outside the USA will be viewed as abandoning your green card. For extended periods of time outside the country, you may need a re-entry permit also.

I didn't know that non registration equates to breaking the law , Thanks for letting me know ... You a life saver

I am in middle of 5 year course of Medical Study , MBBS .... outside USA . So i need to travel outside USA for 5 months as my semester lasts 4.5-5months on average . I am in final year , 2 more semesters ....

Do you know any cons of getting Reentry Permit ? I mean suppose I get a reentry permit but I return within less than 6 months to USA will it cause any issue or problems ?

Thanks again

selective service registration is a MUST.

Thank mate :-)

Have you paid the Immigrant Fee?

Yes I paid it before I flew to USA , Thanks for Reply :-)

So keep checking your ELIS account. It normally takes 1-3 months for the green card but can take up to 8. If it's longer than 4-6 months you need to start contacting the USCIS and even your congressman about the issue.

Yes, you don't want to mess up future options by not registering. And as was mentioned, no one has been called up through the selective service in 50 years.

You don't need a re-entry permit for 5 months out of the country. But adding another 5 months out shortly after the first, you might get some trouble on re-entry. To make things easier, you just might want to have one before you leave the second time. Also having a re-entry permit does not prevent you from returning early. When leaving for more than 6 months the re-entry permit is recommended, for over a year its required. Multiple extended leaves close together enter a grey area, but CBP has been cracking down on those that spend too much time out of the country on their green card. Too many people have used it as a permanent visitors visa. I know a couple that spent half of every year in the wife's country, and half in the USA, they did this for 5 years. CBP told them they were not going to let her back in another time and barely let her back in on her last return. So they're staying in the USA now, at least until she gets citizenship.
