Police Certificates

Hello .. I'm new to this site .. sorry if I'm in the wrong forum topic!

But I have a question regarding the police certificates. I am a Canadian citizen living in Canada and my fiancé is American. I went to school in the States for 4 years and also worked post grad for 1 year while living there as well... I was informed that I need an American and Canadian police certificate.

My question is, do any Canadians know how I would go about receiving an American background check while in Canada? Can I do it online or will I need to go to the States and receive one there somehow?

I may be wrong but I don't think you need an American one, they will do that themselves once you give them the dates etc you were in the US.

You do not need a US background check, the US will automatically do their own.

I think you don't have to get police certificates for any time you lived here. I'll double check.

How to obtain a police certificate:

1. Determine the countries from which a police certificate is required. Refer to the table below.
   
   Note: Present and former residents of the United States need NOT obtain any U.S. police certificates

An applicant must obtain a police certificate from the local police authority:

IF you…

AND…

have been living in your country of nationality at their current residence for more than 6 months

you are 16 years old or older

lived in a different part of your country of nationality for more than 6 months

you were 16 years or older at that time

lived in a different country for more than 12 months

you were 16 years or older at that time

were arrested for any reason

you were any age at the time of the arrest

It looks like you shouldn't have to get a police certificate, but I found this under immigrant visas and you're doing K1. I assume it would be the same requirement, but someone who did the K1 and lived in the US before could tell you if they had to get the police certificate.
