Is there some reason you can't separate my views from those of others that you disagree with? Seriously weird.

I do find it interesting that a lot of Americans on VJ seem unable to take a humanitarian position on anything - juvenile convicts, the poor, the Gaza conflict. Every talking point appears to come from a position of self-righteous anger. It's disturbing.

getting violent offenders off the streets is humanitarian to potential victims.

we have many levels of assistance & resources available to the poor to help them lift their standard of living and improve their future.

not supporting hama's campaign of terror against innocent Jews and supporting the Israeli government right and duty to protect the citizens of Israel. I don't understand how that is being un-humanitarian.

so supporting bombing civilian areas by hamas is humanitarian?

So the only views that a person can have on the issue is Pro-Israel or Pro-Hamas? Why is the only alternate perspective you come up with an extreme one?

Seriously, why are the only perspectives you can put forward on that issue extremist ones? That's got nothing to do with me - it just suggests that you either have a deliberate, purposeful need to frame the debate in that way (i.e. baiting) or you really don't see any alternate perspectives (i.e. genuine ignorance).

its your thread. you want people to debate you on your views. you haven't stated your views. so.....i'm responding to what you have posted. 'baiting' would be making vague comments then attacking people & their responses to your vague comments. again. what are your views?

I believe the US justice system brutalises people. I believe:

  • There are too many ways to put people in jail for years for relatively minor offenses when non-custodial options could yield better results.
  • Social and economic divide means that noone has any interest in the root causes of criminal gang behaviour or why it is so prevalent in some parts of the country.
  • there is a view that people among many Americans that people in jail human are garbage, jail is simply the place where they are disposed of and there is little interest in rehabilitating people.
  • rape and violence are endemic in American prisons and this is, in some cases condoned by prison authorities.
  • American prisons are factories for producing worse criminals than went into jail in the first place.

I don't believe children and juveniles should be prosecuted as adults.

Americans, for whatever reason, are an angry lot. From my experience ignorance and arrogance both play a big role in it.

I think certain agendas are promoted by the media - as I said it's disgraceful that a mainstream news channel would put forward a fascist agenda, especially in the context of an opinion piece.

Only in America does being opposed to Israel bombing Gaza make a person pro-Hamas.
