Hello everyone

We are finally at the point of filing for citizenship.

We entered the country on 29th Oct 2009. So our 5 years is this October.

Our son is 17 as I file but will be 18 in September.

My question is do I need to file for him separately or will he become a citizen automatically when I do?

hi

he will need to file citizenship on his own after he turns 18, there isn't enough time for him to be your derivative

you have to file for citizenship and obtain the Naturalization certificate after your Oath Ceremony before next month, which is impossible. you would need to be a USC today or this month, before he turned 18 for him to derive your citizenship

since it's not going to happen, after he turns 18 he can file the N400 and take the citizenship test and interview as you will be doing. You don't have to file for him, he will be an adult when he turns 18, so he has to file for his own citizenship whenever he wants to. I mean, you can if you want to, you can be the preparer, but he doesn't depend on you, he can do it himself as he is no longer considered a minor child

This is absolutely true.

In addition when he turns 18 first thing to do is to sign him up with selective service you will need this information on his n400.

You can sign him up here www.sss.gov
