Can a Retired US Citizen be the Sponsor?

I read that the Sponsor for the K-1 Visa needs to make at least 125% more than the poverty level annualy.

What if someone is wealthy, yet retired and no longer has any income? Could they be the sponsor to sign the affidavit of support? What exactly does the sponsor need to show, and what evidence do they need to add to my petition packet?

Yes, you can.

You must show that your assets is 3x the aount required for the household size to be elligible to sponsor.

If someone is retired but wealthy, certainly they have retirement income (not but not SSI)

coming in. And likely that retirement can be used towards the 125% requirement.

In addition, assets can be used to make up any shortage,

but the value must be 5 times the shortage amount.

3 times for spouse and usually fiance(e) too, since a lot of consulates follow the I-864 guidelines, even with the I-134 for the K-1 visa. So, if speaking of a co/joint sponsor, then they would need 5 times.

That post was about someone that does not meet the requirements, with income or assets. Someone that meets the requirement through income and/or assets does not need a joint sponsor with the I-864 for AOS.

Well in my situation I certainly don't meet the income or asset requirements, so with my original post I was just wondering what my options are...or if I even have options.

I could work in the US, but I'm currently abroad with my fiancee and have little to no income.

Depending on the consulate, you could use a co-sponsor that meets the requirement for their own household size plus the intending immigrant. http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-864p.pdf

If the consulate you would be going through does not allow co-sponsors with the K-1, then you have the option of getting married and filing for a CR-1 instead. That way a joint sponsor will be allowed with the I-864 used for the spousal visa.
