Over the past 4 years, I went through IAD 11 times and was rerouted for customs inspection only once. Too many bags does raise a flag. Just prepare a full list of your belongings and make sure the customs agent see that you are a new immigrant to explain the excess luggage. It would help to show 1+ year age of any costly items you might have (receipts, for example) to exempt them from duties as a new immigrant.

Good Luck!

Thanks MoBar! Having a list of all my belongings does sound like a good idea. Though finding receipts for the laptop and the little amount of expensive jewerly I have might be a chanllenge!

Having lived overseas and returned to the US twice (with excess luggage) I think the operative phrase is "Household Goods". Saying you are a new immigrant and the suitcases are your "household goods" should be the ticket to getting through as easily as possible. If you are not shipping anything, then adding that "paying for excess luggage was cheaper than the shipping price" will help.

If you have one camera, one laptop/tablet, one phone, clothing that has been washed at least once and doesn't have any tags on it, you shouldn't be in trouble. If everything is brand new, and you have a boatload of electronics, you may raise flags.

Good luck to you - and Welcome!

Hi everyone my hubby just had his medical today. I'm sure he will write about it when we get out of London! Everything went well. Nothing to stress about . Funny thing- I got a phone call from the NVC for my supervisor call back from a month ago. She asked how his interview went. I laughed and said our interview wasn't for another two weeks! Then she asked if we had any questions... Nope. Then apologised for the delay in the phone call. Um yeah, massive delay lol. I asked if there was an issue with our case and she said it was fine. Ok peeps . silly NVC. Anyways I will catch up with VJ later tonight . Eating now as we haven't eaten all day! Good luck everyone!

Not required, but it will delay how long it takes to manufacture your GC. The sooner you pay the sooner it's in your hands.

I will check with my husband...not sure what all he received back. I was under the impression that they give back the passport and a sealed envelope which is to be opened only by the immigration officer at the POE

Open passport and look at REGISTRATION NUMBER.

The GC number's format is: A123456789 (A+9 digits) ... if your registration number is 8 digits (7,6,5....) long you have to put 0 (zero or more zeros) after A and before the number to have A+9 digits number. (Don't worry, it will not allow you to go to next step without the correct number)

All the tips appear on the right side of the website while filling the immigrant fee form.

Thank you !!!

Before the interview i got a piece of paper with instruction how to pay immigrant fee (in english and polish) with my names, case number and registration number. Lady - the one organizing NVC package - explained me how to use it.

Surprised that not every embassy provide this kind of instruction.
