Hi everyone

I take my oath on Friday (yay!) and have made an appointment at the post office for passport application on August 15th. I have read that they are experiencing delays in passport processing, does that mean it will affect me? I am in no rush to travel but curious to know what the current wait times are. Also, how long do they keep your naturalization certificate, will it be for the entire duration of the passport processing or will they send it back right away?

Should I inform the HR dept of my job once I become a USC?

Also, on updating ssn.. Do I have to go to ss office or can I do it online? Do I just go there and tell them I am a USC and please update my info?

Thanks!

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Congratulations!

I have only one answer...

They keep your naturalization certificate for the entire process....they send your passport separate and then your naturalization certificate....the certificate might arrive few days later after receiving the passport...if you are in rush you should apply in person but it will cost you more...and in almost all office they ask the applicant to show prove of their emergency..

And to update your SSN you have to go in person with your certificate and/or passport, I became a US citizen last year. I got my passport in almost 3 weeks 8 months later I got married and I sent my passport back with my marriage certificate to change my last name....it was free because It was before I reach one year with my new passport.

usually the certificate will arrive within 2 weeks after the passport.

- you don't need to inform your HR, they can do nothing if you are usc or not

- you need to update the SSA by going in person because they need to see a proof of your US citizenship.I think you will fill the same form that you filled to obtain your SSN. I think you can do it by mail as well, but I don't recommend that, you don't want your passport or your certificate to get lost some where.

Thanks!! How soon should I update ssn? Can I work on the passport first then worry about that later on or do that first? Can I go to any ss office?

Yes do the passport process first. The SSA office can wait. My mother didn't report it until 10 years later and that's only because she went to change her name, otherwise she would have left it like that. It doesn't really matter really, if your card doesn't have the little red words at the bottom. It's good that you're getting your passport over with now so that you won't have to pull your hair out if you need it at the last minute. Good luck!

This does not constitute legal advice.
