I'd like to know why a 4 year old needs to know covalent bonding?

Well, as it were that we actually do teach my daughter about chemistry, it is because she asks a question and it leads to an answer. Rather than try and over simplify it, I give her a simple explanation followed by a more complex one. Like for example if she asks my stars shine we can get into some of the science behind it.

I seriously got into a conversation with her once about mine optimization and rock formations. Is what it is. I have fond memories of my mother teaching me math tricks and my nanny discussing great works of literature with me. I can't imagine a childhood not like that.

Maybe it doesn't 100% click with her, but it challenges her mind to move forward.

It's one thing to explain, another to have a class about something. It seemed as if this was a regular teaching, not this is how this works, kind of conversation.

I dunno.

I think a 4 year old needs to learn how to play, how to interact with other children, share, colour on the paper not the walls, say please and thank you, eat with utensils, put some things away when they're done playing. They can start to learn to read and write.

But to each their own as everyone learns differently, and at a different pace. Of course parents have a lot of options from homeschooling to private schools. A child who learns quickly shouldn't be held back and a slower learner shouldn't be forced to keep up. Maybe the way they learn is different and both parent and child need to learn to adapt (since the world will rarely adapt to you, sometimes you have to learn how to adapt to it.)

If someone thinks their child is ready for high school chemistry, then maybe private or home schooling would be ideal. There are always other ways to get social interaction than school.

Do they not have a special case allowance? I know here that the superintendent can grant special permission to allow a child less than the age allowed by law into kindergarten.

How about private school? Once they've done kindergarten there seems to be less issue with age and first grade entrance...

You sound like the way I teach my daughter! I was talking to her about hydrogen bonding this week as my husband gave a dumb look. Oh Danish education, how vastly superior you are.

No special case allowance. No private school will let him in either. Not even correspondence. Even the five thousand dollar tuition schools - the answer is no. Believe me we have been looking.

We can do free online stuff so he's enrolled in Kahn Academy for math. Their mom has some online stuff she does with them. Starfall is one of them. We do homeschool every day. I just make up a one-page lesson each day. Mom does writing and a bunch of other stuff. I am mostly science education, reading, and math. School has an academic part and then a phys. ed. part.

NLR - I'd like to know why a 4 year old needs to know covalent bonding?

So that he understands why molecules form out of atoms. Am I supposed to lie to him or what?

I don't think it is going to matter if it is this year or next, he'll still be bored. It is nice, socially speaking, not to be the youngest though.

Yes. and boredom will mean trouble. So we're just going to keep homeschooling.

If we put him in a correspondence school next year, he can get almost $3,000 in reimbursement from the State for just about anything. Musical instruments, computers, supplies, etc. But it means he has to do their curriculum. So we're just going to pay for it ourselves and do our own curriculum.

I home schooled my older kids. We did not tolerate the school system here. I also went by what they were learning in Ontario not Arkansas. The older two boys are in university this year, they did their first two years at the college to save money. The second oldest got himself a full scholarship for the next 2 years. They did notice a big difference between them and the kids that finished high school here. They are also younger then some of their peers as they both started school at 3 yr old, had to be turning 4 before Dec. something (can't remember now).

I'm trying to convince my husband to let me home school the two littlest, but he thinks it will be fine for them as they don't know any different. My problem is that all the schools here are failing big time, they are really horrible. I'm going to start this year with my little Tornado and show him what she can do. Although she will probably do most of her work on my walls. :D

I would do it too and it was always my plan if I had children, but my daughter really emotionally benefits from being in school, so it will have to do.

I am also not exactly happy with the rigor of work in the schools here versus where we moved from, but I knew that would be an issue. I figure if it is an issue later, there is always homeschool or boarding school.

An idea to consider that I did in my high/middle school years were distance and summer education classes for gifted youth that yielded school credit and/or prepped for AP exams. Just a thought if you want them to have the social experience but also a good education.

No. Why is this something he needs to learn vs building a house out of lego? I was interested honestly in why... but I'm not now so don't worry about it. KCCO. :)

Good for you!

It's appalling. Seems to us that conformity is what public school is all about. Control. As a nation, we're doing horribly in science and math especially. That's why we can't look to the public school system as a metric. We have to blow them out of the water. Socially too - just look at the gangsta culture in the schools. We don't like what we see going on socially - with the other kids and between the kids and the teachers/administrators.

N-O-L-a, thank you for your thoughts too.

I started by singing the alphabet through my wife's stomach wall to the kids during pregnancy. And we did a lot of early infant learning stuff. The earliest stuff was locomotor development because that is the gateway to what they call the "dawn of active thought". Especially upright assisted walking, by two months of age. That's what gets their brain working.

So we didn't suddenly start teaching chemistry. We read a lot of peer-reviewed early infant learning literature. It's amazing how differently the scientists view children - they view them as a lot more capable, intelligent, and eager learners than our society views them.

he has to be Many years old. He's doing covalent bonding in chemistry right now.

He'll be Many years old soon, if he isn't already, si and no man.

I'd like to know why a Many year old needs to know covalent bonding?

For his sake, I hope that he's also proficient in Polish Math -- a crucial skill, oj tak.
