You only need the letter if the vehicle has a sticker that it says complies with the Canadian regulations, if it has one that says it complies with US ones (FMV I think) then you don't need a letter.

Thanks for the info Gwen...Its unbelievable that they actually charge you to give you that letter though! I mean c'mon, its just a piece of paper! lol

I know!!! So annoying. Although our is a 1994 so they sent us to some "vintage" department. lol Maybe the letter for a newer model wouldn't be that much of a charge.

However, $99 to get the car across the border is way less than any other options we had!

Only unfortunately mine has the one that says it conforms to Canadian standards rather than American...so alas I must chase down a (apparently expensive) piece of paper!

Yeah - same thing. But its great that it is compliant and did not need to have any modifications and all that. Plus Chevy was super easy to work with - compared to other stories I have read about on here.

You can go to the website and contact customer service - they will direct you to the dept that can provide the letter. They emailed us the request form and we filled it out and faxed it back along with payment info. Then they emailed us the letter and also sent us a paper copy to present at the border.

Be sure to also check with your insurance agent. Coming from beautiful BC I had to cancel my private portion of insurance and get WAY more expensive ICBC insurance- something called "territory Z". Our insurance agent here (Iowa) would insure it if I put my fiancé's name on it, other than that they want SSN. It's apparently different from just visiting because you are permanently leaving the country. Just when I thought the money drain had slowed down....
